Only 11 players not yet got votes, good spread and suggests lots of opinions - I meant to say, please do feel free to opinionate on your vote, it makes it more interesting!
By the way, one factor folks may consider when voting is head to heads. The players are listed from most recent year end number 1 roughly to most distant. So many players will have head to heads with the player directly next to them.
Tennis abstract has head to heads back to open era, other sources are available. I certainly think h2h plays a part where top players have similar records, but is clearly one of many factors.
Mens Round One polls have started well. Some really interesting votes and shows how we all come from different perspectives. Andy and Fred Perry are both doing well and I find that hard to put down to much more than supporting the Brits, partic with Angela Mortimer getting into the womens semis. Much as I love them all, I dont see Andy above 5th in his group, Fred is my 4th choice in his group and Mortimer was probably 4th or 5th in her group for me - but what do I know and it is good to see the variety of votes coming in across the different groups!
Looking at the mens, for me 10 players stand out, maybe 12 if I stretch my imagination! But 5 stand out a step or two ahead of the rest, I am trying to work which of those 5 will get my vote at the end of the day.
In the womens, there are also 5 players who literally I cant tell one from the other. I have drawn the ladies semis tonight and of those big 5, 3 are in one and 2 in the other but it is a strong line up generally.
Remember, the semi are 2 groups of 6 players, top 2 progress to a 4 player final
For the players at the bottom of each list, it is worth checking their records (wiki is a decent place to do that). Most of these players played pre Open era, Kramer, Budge, Gonzales, Crawford, Riggs, Vines, Segura and Perry - they all had massively successful pro careers and most won one of the Pro Majors (the Wembley Pro, US Pro Indoor, French Pro and the Tournament of Champions played in New York or Australia in the later 50's
Remember, mens polls close at 6 pm today. After any tie play offs, which will be cross group, my aim is to then get both womens and mens semis groups posted by between 10 and 11 pm tonight.
In the womens event, only 8 of the 12 I anticipated coming through made it to the semis, so good to see the mini shake up.
In the mens, it is lining up similarly, Budge, Newcombe, Murray and Perry were all on my "expect them to go out first round" list , and all are positioned to go through currently.
good to see it is proving unpredictable , at least in terms of the players outside the likely half dozen favourites in each category
2 of the mens groups have ties currently for 3rd place with 21 votes placed. If it stays like that there will be (as per a note earlier in this thread) be ONE single tie play off featuring the tied players for the unfilled places - as it stands, 4 players vying for 2 places.
