Coronavirus - general, non tennis related

What will it take to Vaccinate the world against Corona ?

With the current surge of deaths in India(allegedly due to the emergence of a double mutant) and Germany implementing harsher lockdown rules until June, there are a couple of interesting article in Nature and the BMJ on the issue of vaccine distribution.....

Companies say they could make enough vaccines to immunize most of the worlds population by the end of 2021. But this doesnt take into account politically based delays in distribution, such as countries imposing export controls or that the overwhelming majority of doses are going to wealthier countries.

This is a global war and our species is not yet winning. That has to change, from tomorrow.

So Dominic Cummings is compiling a dosier on Boris Johnson, including assigning personal blame to Johnson for much of the second wave covid death toll. Does he also estimatate the additional first wave death toll caused by his own unrepentant little Durham trip, which appeared to have quite a lot to do wirh lower general compliance with rules thereafter, in what was arguably a more ineptly handled first wave response when he himself was very much still around?

Johnson, of course, has many faults but the government seems to have noticeably less politicised and lied about covid since Cummings departed the scene. He seems to be a rather horrible individual who we don't need to hear from at this time. Save proper covid info, as distinct to points scoring, for an inevitable general covid inquiry down the line.

Clearly Cummings thinks the best form of defence is attack?? hmm

Completely agree, Indy, Dominic Cummings is an utter weasel and caused major harm by his actions....

Personally, the Castle eye thing was ridiculous but nowhere near as bad - IMO - as the trip in the first place.

To have two sick and infectious adults travel the length of the country when travel was forbidden except in emergencies, is criminal, in my view. And this involved stops, and then trips to the hospital when the kiddie got sick. You can't keep yourself to yourself, some interaction is inevitable, passing the virus on nicely.

And if childcare was an emergency, then that could easily have been sorted by getting a (non-infected) relative to come down to London.

HOWEVER, at least he was a quiet weasel until a week or so ago.

So what on EARTH was Boris doing shaking his cage?

Boris has no one to blame but himself (as usual). He's done Keir's job for him (glad someone has......we could die waiting for Keir to do it, seemingly)

Though to be fair Johnson did cost covid lives - by not sacking Cummings after his trip and ridiculous defence.

He could have reversed Cummings' damage at that time, and sent a very clear message that might have made the whole episode a net positive. He chose not to.

Being devils advocate though (and don't get me wrong I cant stand Cummings, Boris or give them any credit for how they handled the whole Durham thing) do you think Cummings trip and the lack of a sacking actually did cost lives? What I mean is, to have cost lives it must mean that people looked at it and wilfully said "he did it, I will do similar" and behaviours changed...did they? As in, did anyone really look at what happened with Cummings and use it as freedom to also defy the rules in place?

They may  have done, I don't know but I never felt as if there was a direct link of people behaving equally badly and criminally just because Cummings did it - if they did, boy is this a messed up world we live in!

Yes, I do honestly think it all cost lives, whatever that may say about the folk that relaxed their rules adherence.

The 'all in it together' was quite a thing. The early month or two of the first lockdown, up here anyway, was easily the best observed lockdown period, judging by people and road traffic out and about. And the episode came when maybe some were ready to wilt.

Yes, me too. I know quite a lot of people who said, well, f**k it, if they're doing it, I can too.
I must admit, I felt a bit of that myself.
As Indy says, the whole of lockdown relies on solidarity. No one can actually police the rules.
So it's down to people.
And when Cummings flipped the finger at the rules, and Boris said, who cares, that sent a very clear message. That people were happy to take on.

In Liverpool , cases are really low. However, I know some of the people who work at the test centre in Wavertree and they are saying they are very busy.
However, this seems to be businesses sending their staff twice a week as part of the free lateral test initiatives. So mass testing seems to be a positive aspect in identifying some asymptomatic cases and reducing the virus in the community.

Liverpool hosted Britains first legal nightclub event in an attempt to identify how quickly things in the UK can return to normal. 3000 people attended Circus nightclub having first proved they were negative for C-19. They are required to take a follow up testing 5 days time.

With more relaxations, the UK new covid cases have again been dropping slower over the last 2 weeks but at least have still been dropping. Last 2 weeks' new cases and death figures:

10/04 - 16/04 : 17816,  185

17/04 - 23/04 : 17377 (25.5 per 100K),  160

 24/04 - 30/04 : 15514 (22.8 per 100K),  132

Heard a rumour today that 10% of ticket holders at one of the two events(nightclub or concert) tested positive via a lateral test and were refused entry.

Unless they were false positives or my information is incorrect, expect the positive test numbers to jump.

Rumour must have been wrong as the numbers weren't reflected in the data. It must have been providing incorrect data and refused entry.

- so slight rise back up in the week's new cases
