Week 9 - WTA International ($250K) - Monterrey, Mexico Hard

Great for Jo to get the win. With her slice heavy game Maria feels like one of those players that Jo struggles against (like Vondrousova, Strycova, Jabeur). Hopefully Jo can hit through the German.

Oh well done Jo! I really like Kim, but Jo needed this so much more.

Apart from Wimbledon and the US Open, that was Jo's 1st singles win since beating Maria Sakkari at Eastbourne .

I agree that Maria is the sort of tricky player that Jo often struggles with, but surely if she could produce such amazing service stats like this again she should be fine?   Not that I want to tempt providence.  I confidently predicted she would lose to Kim and couldn't have been more happy that I was wrong.

Just amazing it's been so long for someone still ranked at 15 in the world! no

Of course, unless there is some upturn, her ranking will plummet once the season turns to the clay, well depending on how much of the clay season goes ahead at the moment...

I wonder if Jo spends as much time worrying about this as we do? At the moment she has 2,694 ranking points of which 2,225 came from Rome, Paris, Wimbledon and US Open. If the clay court season was cancelled then other players ranking might plummet as well such as Vondrousova who has  2,307 points 1,300 are from Paris. What will happen later on in the season with the Chinese tournaments? This will not affect Jo's ranking. Similarly what will happen to the Fed Cup finals in Budapest? It is a global event.   Wearing my pessimists  fact hat,  after she won Miami in 2017 , the 2019 US Open is the only outdoor hardcourt tournament in which Jo has won more than 2 matches. It's a shame in one way that we don't have Heather v. Jo 2nd round match in Monterrey  but on the other hand how would the forum  have  reported it  ? Would there have been any bias? Thankfully we'll never know.

confuse
Because Wimbledon and the US Open aren't important tournaments and her 8 wins there are insignificant? confuse

I did not say Wimbledon and the US Open are not important. I was trying to point out on the main WTA tour Jo had not won any  singles matches since Eastbourne until Monterrey this week. And she also went 6 months without a singles  wn anywhere whether it was the Grand Slams or WTA tour.

Jo and Elena give a walk over in doubles, but both still appear to be in their respective singles matches. Anyone any news?

This looks like it's from a Mexican verified presenter/journalist, who seems to think it was Konta:

Badly translated:
Johanna Konta has retired from the doubles team of
@Abierto_GNP
due to injury, but everything seems to indicate that it will continue in the singles (it is number two of the planting).

Hopefully just a case of wanting to concentrate on the singles.

The first match today is due to start at 17.00 British time and Jo is scheduled to follow when that's finished. This assumes her knee lets her play. If it doesn't then sadly I would think her future tennis career was in jeopardy. As it is, this year has been play, pull out, play, no Fed Cup, play, pull out, play, pull out doubles here.

Are you sure? That would make FAR more sense, but Google and Bet365 are both showing 9pm UK for Konta (and 5pm for Potapova), and then the 2 other matches following on from each other from 1am. I did think it seemed the most random OOP having one match start at 5pm, another at 9pm, and then the 3rd at 1am, but if Jo does follow straight on from Potapova that would be more traditional.

Didn't realise there was a men's event here this week, and there is a men's match between Potapova and Konta, so that makes more sense, and Konta is NB 3pm local, so 9pm here, so it'll be 9pm at the earliest, depending on how the first 2 matches go.
