Harriet gets the win despite a terrible performance in such a low quality match. The 3rd set was embarrassing from both players. Harriet's first winner of that set came in the 6th game. For long spells she was almost totally reliant on gifts from Misaki.
Feel a bit sorry for Misaki because at least she tried to attack, while Harriet was so passive. But ultimately Doi's error count was the difference between the players.

Hmm I feel like saying it was a terrible performance is a bit much. And I enjoyed watching it so thats important ha! Good for Harriet though, pray she does OK against Halep

I don't think that's quite fair.
I've seen far worse women's matches than that .....
I don't think clean winners is an important number - as Federer says, if the opponent just gets their racket to a ball, it doesn't count as a winner. But it certainly is.
Harriet's inside-out forehand worked well. Her first serve chalked up a fair few winners. She was definitely on the back foot in quite a few rallies but that's good defensive skills - someone like Woz got to be number one in the world basically because of that.
I think, given her ranking, she did amazingly well - and played well too.
Well done Harriet. None of these matches are easy. So nervous in the first round. She's done brilliantly to get through qualies and beat the world number 82.
Well done Harriet Dart, the qualifier wins her 4th match, great battling from her. Now to enjoy the match with Halep, nothing to lose, just try to play in a confident fashion, one point at a time.
The other results involving Brits today didn't go our way, but some hard fought matches in there, so they did their best on the day. It's only the start of a long season.
Managed to watch Katie's match before work (she played very well, considering how long she's been off, and who she was playing), but missed all of Harriet's match. Thanks for all the commentary - going to keep an eye out for a repeat on Eurosport player, although it sounds like it might not appear.
Stayed awake until 4am here in NYC to watch Katie and that was the right decision. She played incredibly well, especially given how long she's been off. She hits clean, goes for every second serve and hits out well from the middle of the court. If she can improve her movement and her consistency, her ranking could go higher than most of us predicted. She had her chances in the first set to win it - Svitolina just hung in there and had a little more variety and movement.
Gutted to have missed the Harriet match, hopefully I can catch up on it.
