Week 2 - WTA International ($275k) - Hobart, Australia - Hard

Rybakina is 20, even though the WTA site can't be bothered to list her age, despite her being WR 30. Another fascinating match up in prospect, let's hope.

QF: WATSON, Heather (GBR) [Q] 101 v MERTENS, Elize (BEL) [1] 17 (CH=12 26/11/18)

SF: WATSON, Heather (GBR) [Q] 101 vs RYBAKINA, Elena (KAZ) [3] 30=CH

Fantastic for Heather. A few weeks ago languishing in the 100s and facing AO qualifying. She scrapes into the main draw (last place?) and that frees up Hobart to gain confidence and all these points. The topsy turvy nature of this latest match against a high ranking player shows good form, determination and stamina. Hope she gets time to recover. Has she still got a doubles match to play today?

They gave a walkover to the #2 seeds. Hardly surprising after such a long match

Did not expect to see this result! BLOODY FANTASTIC TO SEE! I've not seen a Heather performance like this since.... Serena? She was striking cleanly, constantly deep in the court with controlled aggression. Alex Ward working some magic?

I really do hope she can continue this, she does have the game to have been a consistent 30-50 player throughout her career. But the past few years she's lacked any confidence. Anyway, good luck against Rybakina! Crazy how quickly she has raced up the rankings, to put it into context, at the US Open she was still in qualifiers. Now at the Aussie Open she'll be seeded!

She was the victim of that 6 week cut off at the US Open because she'd just won a WTA title in Bucharest and was ranked 69 heading into quals, a little bit like Zheng the year before, but yeah, even still, to actually have to go through quals in one slam, and then be seeded at the next is pretty insane.

She's won so many WTA matches since Instanbul last April or May.

Is that a career high best win ranking wise? .

And where does 3 hours 33 stack up in terms of longest matches

Heather's career high win is No.8  Agnieszka Radwanska Indian Wells 2015

According to Wikipedia it will be 67th= longest women's match (not just WTA)

Harriet is no. 14 for 4 hours 4 min $15k in Thailand 2017

Interesting to see how many on the list were from 2019.

Off to bed next and getting up early to watch most of the Heather match. She's 2nd on from 5.30am, rain delays permitting.
