Fab win !

Is that a career high best win ranking wise? .

And where does 3 hours 33 stack up in terms of longest matches

Superb.

Plays the winner of the next match. I'll watch that one.

Na, she's had a few higher ranked wins, but this is the best for a few years.

A fantastic result. Mertens is two-time incumbent champion here in Hobart, and I watched her last match against Kuzmova and her form there looked like the hat-trick was very much on.

But the 2015 champion took the 2017 & 18 champion out!

Hev beat Aga in Indian wells in 2015, when the pole was WR8, but this is right up there with her best, as referenced above.

What a filip to GB hopes. Can she sustain her season like this though? Hev has often started quite well but faded and not found a way to regroup later in the season as the doubt setts in. Perhaps this time will be different 'new decade'* new Hev.

(* arguments about when decades actually begin notwithstanding)

Well done. Its always a joy when Heather does well. A smiling Ms. Watson is very good medicine.

Well this is a tremendous win for Heather with a lot of upsides. She's now up to LR 75 and has banked 128 pts so far this week. This makes the AO an entirely free go for her. She didn't win a match there last year, so she will already recover the 10 pts from there last year by being back in the draw this year. So those that doubted the wisdom of her playing Hobart and the value of a long run here, the value is huge, especially the boost to her confidence again... and so lovely to see that beam of hers back as well, which is a really good indicator of her confidence level too...

Aussie WC Cabrera has just taken the first set against #3 seed Rybakina, so it'll either be a more favourable semi final (on paper at least), or a very late finish for Rybakina (or Cabrera either if it does go 3). If it is Rybakina then as she made the Shenzhen final last week, it would be her 9th match in 12 days, which you'd think should negate the Hev match length today.

Edit - they've exchanged tie break sets, so it's going into a deciding set.

So pleased for Heather. Shows it's so much about state of mind for her. Glad to see it all coming together. As everyone says, she's got a great smile.

Fantastic for Heather. A few weeks ago languishing in the 100s and facing AO qualifying. She scrapes into the main draw (last place?) and that frees up Hobart to gain confidence and all these points. The topsy turvy nature of this latest match against a high ranking player shows good form, determination and stamina. Hope she gets time to recover. Has she still got a doubles match to play today?

Rybakina won 6-7 7-6 7-5 in a long match that finished at 11.10pm.

She's fast becoming one of my favourite players to watch, so I'm good either way tomorrow, another WTA final for one of them, and the loser can get back on the mainland sooner and prep for the AO. Still hoping Heather wins though.
