It would still be a major disappointment if Jamie and Joe didnt take this comfortably. Famous last words

I sincerely hope not!  First set down the pan, though:  6-7(5).  Not a single, solitary service break in that set.

Even stevens:  second set in the bag by 7-6(2) at 02.30 local time after they served for it at 5-4.  Nail-biting MTB time...

Does anyone on here understand how ranking points are allocated in this tournament. I thought I saw something that suggested it was dependent on player ranking, but I couldn't believe that was right? Thanks

Points explained by Wiki in reasonably intelligible tabular form here (scroll down to near the end).

Thank you SC - that sort of makes a bit more sense now, although I don't understand why a player ranked 300+ would only get 25 points if he were to beat a top 10 player at the group stage.  Surely that should be worth more points not less?

Predictable, I suppose, but he looked to be holding his own quite until the last few games of the econd set.  So it all hinges on the doubles.

You were saying, Jon?

What a shame. But great match, what I saw of it.

A career high of 448 in doubles yet he beats two of the top doubles players in the world, crikey!

Wolf, when you say stadium is at 2 percent capacity, you mean theres virtually no one watching?

Is that the same across all the initial matches?

For the Belgium vs Moldova match there was about 100 people watching at the start. Didn't see the rest.

This format is way to similar to the Davis Cup

I think it is to do with the fact that, particularly for lower ranked players, this opportunity to compete here has only been given to a select few. And it may arguablly be a bit of an unfair distortion in comparison to their ranking peers if they can then further benefit by picking up very big ranking points. There are still decent points avaliable for players outside the top 300 and any wins here will be s boost.

As soon as you award ATP points for an event like this, not open to all of a similar ranking, then you've got other considerations such as fairness, which I think has much to do with the fsirly involved ranking points allocation.

You then though do have that distortion for similar ranking wins, so fairness or unfairness or a decent response to the ATP points scenario ...

Got to surely turn 2 into 1 in the future.

Agreed re reducing to 1. And 24 nations is too many for quality of tennis to be sustained across all ties. 16 is the max as discussed when davis cup was played.

GB loss today was a blow. We need to beat belgium and moldova and hope belgium beat bulgaria in order to top group, and getting 2nd place qualifying slot will probably require another 5 or 6 rubber wins ie no more losses. Hard to see that happening.

However compatible or otherwise Jamie & Joe are as a doubles parynership, I did fully expect that their individual strengths would gel well enough to get the job done. But not to be

Certainly still in it as the scenarios Jon puts of us beating Belgium and Moldova and Belgium beating Bulgaria do look possible but no doubt needs performance upgrades from the team. And one of the runner-up qualifying spots is also a possibility ( I would take a guess that a 2-1 6-3 record will likely be in the RU running ). At least we didn't lose 3-0!

Cam has lost 2&4 so Dan has to beat Goffin or GB will fail to qualify.
