British Tour - 2020

I've seen Holly Staff play live - she's quite tenacious, I like her attitude on the court, and technically solid. But I think you possibly oversell her.....

However, as Marni's my longtime little fave, I obviously won't dispute your other point

Looking forward to Erin v Em Arb - always liked Em Arb's game, very dynamic and rather duracell bunny...... but Erin did well last year, saw her play an excellent match against Alexa Noel in juniors so will be interesting.

nice to catch a few balls of Jessica Dawson too, age 16 I believe?, who I've never really heard of....

Quite possibly CD - It's still probably more to do with that win over Lissey last year as a 16 year old which stands her in better stead in my mind, although one could have been playing out of her skin, and the other well off. Plus she has had a few routine defeats since then.

I was also going to ask the exact same about Jessica, and thought she might have been at college until I saw she was 16. I think she's the only name in the entire field this week that I haven't heard of.

I don't often watch the women's matches, generally only if I know the player(s). Emily comfortably takes the first set from Erin. I like Emily's game, she's very smart academically and I think this comes through in her game, showing more variety of shot/play than many of her fellow college players.mHer success in college doubles makes her handy around the net. Erin needs to switch it up for the second set, she hit too many balls down the middle and wasn't consistent enough on her forehand for me.

First rounds:

Maia 6-3 6-0 Emma W
Emily Ar 6-2 6-4 Erin R
Amelia R 6-2 6-1 Alice G
Marni 6-1 6-2 Holly S
Amelia B 7-6(4) 6-3 Grace
Jessica 6-3 6-1 Anna P
Lily 6-0 6-1 Indianna
Alicia D 5-7 6-1 10-8 Nadia

There seems so many Amelia's, Alicia's and Alice's amongst our players.

Tomorrow's QF schedule (presumably the semi finals will follow later in the day). First matches at 10am:

Centre
(4) Emily Ar vs Marni

Court 5
Amelia B vs Amelia R
(1) Lily vs Alicia D

Court 6
(2) Maia vs Jessica

Backing Amelia for a semis place here.

Amelia did win Jon wink, Rajecki that is, and Maia has won at pretty much the same time, so they play each other in one semi later in the day. 16 y/o Jessica pushed Maia pretty close 6-4 6-4, and was *4-3 up in that first set.

Jessica Dawson should be pleased with herself, giving Maia a good match, which Maia only won 6-4 6-4

Amelia R def. Millie B more easily (3 and 2)

Ditto to Ace above smile

Was that Maia's first match since lockdown ? Don't think I've seen anything about her playing recently

She definitely played yesterday. But this is her first tournament for ages, I believe.

Also heard something about a hand injury????

Yeah, think I read she was ill for most of Jan-Mar pre pandemic, buy didn't hear of a potential hand injury. Seemingly pushed a lot closer today than yesterday.

Marni comes through a tense MTB with Emily Arb 13-11, but was in visible pain towards the end, referred to as an on-going issue/injury in her post match interview.

I was wanting Marni to win from the start, but towards the end I wasn't so sure as I was thinking it wouldn't be a big shock if she withdrew before or retired during her semi final (presumably against Lily), so might have been better if Emily had tsken it.

Hopefully Marni will be able to give it a good go.

Super win for young Alicia Dudeney over Lily WTA 351

She's got a lot of things to work on, but got a good arm, and she's only 17.....

Amazing comeback after a 20 odd minute 0-6 first set. Bar the first point, she was never behind in the MTB, and pretty much always ahead, so I was willing her over the line. It psychologically might make Marni feel more up to competing now that she plays a fellow 17 year old, rather than someone with a recent W25 title, and in the mid 300s as CD says (assuming she hasn't already withdrawn).

Marni has given a w/o, Alicia D into the final.

Thanks FW, not a surprise.

Nice opportunity, and prize money, for Alicia now, she's gone from looking like losing routinely 0-6 0/1/2-6 in the QF, to making the final out of nowhere. Well done her.
