Boys & Girls: JA Osaka, Japan, hard (Week 42)

The Osaka Mayor's Cup - World Super Junior Tennis Championships, to use its modest full title, has been a focal Grade A event in October for many years.  Five Brits here - the one surprise to me being Harry Wendelken, who finishes his junior career shortly.  Amarni Banks plays a similarly ranked player from the Northern Mariana Islands

Boys R1 (L64)

(Q) Daiki Yoshimura (JPN) v Lui Maxted

(13) Harry Wendelken v (Q) Sohma Nakagomi (JPN)

(15) Taiyo Yamanaka (JPN) v (Q) William Nolan

Girls R1 (L64)

Ya Yi Yang (TPE) v (8) Matilda Mutavdzic

Carol Young Suh Lee (NMI) v Amarni Banks

Young Will Nolan (born 2003) has just lost in the a third-set TB against Yamanaka, (born 2001), JWR 90.

Great effort against a top-100 player.

In the only other singles match with British interest today Lui won to set up a match against the 16th seed, whose record is encouragingly modest for a seed here

Lui Maxted d. (Q) Daiki Yoshimura (JPN) 6-4 6-3
(13) Harry Wendelken v (Q) Sohma Nakagomi (JPN)
(15) Taiyo Yamanaka (JPN) d. (Q) William Nolan 6-4 5-7 7-6(1)

R2

Lui Maxted v (16) Chen Dong (AUS)

Bit of a disaster for Matilda, who lost both her singles and doubles today.

And Marni lost her singles too (but won the dubs).

A win for Harry W though....

Matilda's opponent won a Grade 2 recently, so clearly useful (and similar relatively young age)

R2

Lui Maxted v (16) Chen Dong (AUS
(13) Harry Wendelken v Raphael Collignon (BEL)

Girls R1 (L64)

Ya Yi Yang (TPE) d. (8) Matilda Mutavdzic 7-5 6-3
Carol Young Suh Lee (NMI) d. Amarni Banks 6-3 6-1

French player, Diane Parry (born 2002), won this event in the girls, and takes over the junior ranking number one spot (although, to be fair, last week's number one made the final of the 25k at Waco (Leylah Fernandez) and is now top-250 in the adults - Diane is top-350).

The boys was also won by a French player, Mayot (born 2002).
