In an effort to gain more clay court practice, Andy Murray and Tim Henman have decided to pair up at next week's Monte Carlo Masters Series in Monaco. The Glasgow Evening Times has reported that Britain's number one and number three will join forces in a bid to become more adjusted to the surface at the start of a lengthy clay court season.
Andy, who has flown out to Monte Carlo early to get in some practice with Novak Djokovic amongst others, has never partnered Henman in a doubles event before so this will be a first time partnership sure to draw in lots of fans next week.
Henman is a two time former winner of the Monte Carlo doubles event. In 2004, Henman took to the doubles court with Nenad Zimonjic of Serbia and Montenegro and they put on an entertaining run all the way to the title beating experienced teams in every round. Much earlier in 1999 Henman paired up with Frenchman Delaitre and they beat Novak/Rikl in the final to lift the tophy.
Monte Carlo is an event in which Henman often plays doubles to try and find his feet on the dirt a little sooner. Last year he partnered Allegro, in 2003 Santoro, Magnus Norman in 2001, and in 2000 he paired up with Delaitre again after winning it the year before. In 2000 Henman reached a career high of 62 in the doubles world rankings, so will likely prove to be a good and very experienced partner for Murray when they take to the court next week.
USF, just posted a link on some other forums to both here and the affilated site.
I'd love to watch this match, i think they'd make a great team with their complementing styles. Maybe Andy will learn a thing or two about volleying from henman!
Great that they are playing together -I hope they get a kind draw and do well! I also just wanted to flag up th videos from DC I put on the web site for anyone who hasn't seen them. Unfortunately my big camera went kaput right before the tie started, so I couldn't get many decent pics, but the videos came out OK. They are in the article about what the fans say a also in the AC section below the photos. Enjoy!
Apart from learning the volleying skill that Tim has shown for years he may also pick up on some other Tim traits.....like not telling the umpire to f*** off etc.....
This is a great move. I am so happy they decided to team up. After Henman won the title there in 2004 he had a great run on the Clay and so hopefully this works for them both. I do remember Henman got a little tired that week though or maybe the week after as he had too many matches after doing well in singles and doubles, but it still prepared him well for a good clay season.
