Onclin exposing him in the second set 0-3

He was slightly unlucky to get broken right at the start.

It's been pretty close since

 All credit to Anton.

He broke back, playing the match very much on his own terms, using his strengths.

But he got broken again right at the last, not helped by the umpire who - with Anton at 15-40 down - overruled a linecall against Anton and gave the point to Onclin.

The overrule might have been right and Anton was in trouble with the shot, but it was a very quick call, so it's quite reasonable that the call stopped Anton doing the full follow-through on his shot which might have made the difference.

Hard to see him getting the third....... but he's played a good match till now.

Huge kudos to Anton as my 'hard to see him getting the third' comment proves spectacularly wrong ! biggrin

Excellent third set. Carried on from sets one and two. Stuck to his guns and his game plan. Onclin tried hard to pepper his backhand but it didn't work.

His serve, and forehand, really did a lot of damage - rather Kyle-esque, really, with the same things to work on too.

And he was extremely level-headed, and polite to the ballkids (including the one whose head he nearly took off with his serve)

Well done, that young man.

Yes well done Anton. He probably benefited from a tough draw against the Roehampton champion.  It meant he had to concentrate on his strengths with a simple game plan to deny Onclin any rhythm to really display his obviously strong all-round game .  The strengths are the same as last year, perhaps even more markedly so. The power will give him a decent chance of causing damage in the pro game, but only if he works on other aspects of his game, which seemed as lacking as they were last year.

Blu Baker doing well in the first set - 4-1 up.

And well done to Anton. Onclin obviously on form after winning his last tournament. Would be interested to hear what his weaknesses are?

Blu into the deciding set. Needs to refocus.

Yes, it's a bit worrying that he doesn't even know the score or which side to stand on occasions......

Blu played a rather dim match at times there. Didn't really know what schemes of play he was looking to play.

Jack PJ was well beaten by a strong opponent.

In terms of 2003-ers, though, I'm rooting more for Derrick (who also has an easier draw)

Derrick was ahead in both sets but lost out. Anton is in a strong section of the draw. His next opponent has won a 25K Futures title, so is likely to handle Anton's power better than Onclin. If Anton wins that the Danish top seed (who he lost to at Roehampton) is likely to be his round 3 opponent. Both Anton and Arthur's R2 opponents have ATP rankings around 600

R1 (L64)
