Week 25 - Challenger (€137,560+H) - Ilkley Trophy, Ilkley, Yorkshire, Great Britain (grass)

Well people know my thoughts on wc's so I am not going to waffle on about how unfair I think they can be and how much bias and favoritism is involved but I must say I was very impressed with my first visit to Ilkley. Undoubtedly the weather helped but great setting, some good tennis and when you consider that Championship Football Clubs and below - at least near where I live - charge in excess of £20 for one 90 minute home league match, £13.50 is great value. Certainly more than reasonable. No parking charge either for cars - suppose that must be to encourage people to come. Walk to the ground was very nice - so different from Wimbledon but not in a bad way necessarily. Will certainly return next year all being well.

Great to hear that, A131.

And great to post it, too - important to give good feedback.

I was impressed by the noise of the crowd yesterday, for Paul's match (on livestream)

Far more animated than many places. Which I love to see - truly raucous suits me even better

Indeed good to hear. Ilkley has ambitions to get to Tour level, it would need a big upgrade but the money is there and the requirement is to see what slot can come  up to bid for. Antalya is available next year but as Eastbourne is that week I am not sure Ilkley would be allowed to be in the same week?

Nonetheless, with Paul as a local (as in Yorkshire) interest, it is great to get behind a local lad and I hope Paul can somehow get through to the weekend when I am going!

Unfortunately, I had gone by then but noticed they were not particularly raucous during the first set of Katie Swan or when Liam Broady started again. The bloke that beat Liam Broady did seem to have a peculiar style.

Well I was wondering whether it would ever see a regular tour event and realistically how many years off that would be. But if its is doable then I'm in.

Anyone see the first few games? Paul had a hundred % first serve win, so I imagine he missed some first serves when he was broken. What a lovely top spin lob he just did in the Novak current service game.

I love the way Paul works the points. In all the matches Ive seen him play, he really moves his opponent around a lot.

Paul loses 6-3 6-2. But despite the score line was not completely outclassed, especially in the first set. But Novak made fewer errors and was more effective on second serve. But overall a good grass season so far for Paul.

Hope you get a good match Jon! (Is it the weather? I know the B'ham final has moved a bit earlier) or is it always so early!?
