Week 24 - ITF (W100) - Manchester, Great Britain - Grass

It's a shame the likes of Holly S, Eden Richardson, Destinee or Esther weren't able to play here for whatever reason, those who can compete, rather than the usual sacrificial lambs as put earlier.

Vic lost 6-7(5) 5-7, but looks a good effort over someone fresh from winning a W25 final (vs Maia). Holly H made a great start against another recent W25 winner Inglis and had chances for a double break, but the Aussie is on the board now *2-1.

Yes. For someone still a junior, that's a very good score.

Even at Surbiton, and although losing far more heavily in terms of score, Vic put on a decent show. As in, she looked very much a junior, or inexperienced, and does not move that well round the court but she's a tall girl and young so that's hardly surprising. On the other hand, she gets a lot of pace, has a good serve, and is not spindly, rather in the Freya, Jodie mould, the sort of player who will 'grow into herself'.

Holly has been pegged back to *4-5
"Little" sis Scarlett finally managed to hold serve to avoid a double bagel.
Emily A is 4-3*
Ola is 0-3* though

I don't know much about Stefani or her credentials on grass, but I was expecting Alice to be a bit more competitive. She's 1-6 *1-5 and only 2 games have gone to deuce. She's just saved a match point.

A more encouraging scoreline for Holly though, she's 5-7 3-5*, but Inglis has been climbing the rankings recently.

Well done Emily, the first of the day against the odds

Holly and Alice have lost in the last few minutes, and Ola is at the brink

Get in Emily. She just needs by pass that W25 level and concentrate on W100 biggrin. Really pleased for her.

Inglis up next. Holly was in a decent position in both sets, so while it's a shame it's not an all GB FQR, hopefully Emily might be able to do something there. But for now, that's 4 points in the bag, so almost the same amount as a W25 R1 win, and a bit of progress.

Well done to Emily

In the short term the 4 points earned for that QR1 win will so far move her up 2 places in the GB rankings with Vic having lost and Ella presumably not playing.

May still be quite tight re getting one of the 11 DAs for the Wimbledon Q WC play-offs. There should be 2 discretionary WCs for this assuming an additional one on offer due to the GB junior #1 ( currently Emma ) not needing one ( I imagine a direct Q WC for Emma if she wants it ). GB juniors outside the top 2 such as current #3 Vic and # 4 Amarni may also be eyeing the discretionary WCs. Matilda #2 would currently be in on junior ranking ( again that would be released as a further discretionary WC if not taken up ).

Current live GB rankings :

19. Emma 43 points
20. Freya 40
21. Mandy 26
22. Emily App 16 ( including 4 so far here )
23. Victoria 13
24. Ella 11

Ola lost 2-6 4-6

Which is not too bad....

I do wonder if Ola will possibly have a go at Wimbly juniors this year - I know she's never graced juniors with her favour, and I've got quite a lot of respect for that, but it's her last year, she's obviously playing quite decently - it does seem a shame to turn down a QWC, if she were ask for one and get one

Main draw is out, although the way that site works, maybe not yet for all forum members. Bit of a mixed bag, but could be opportunities for one or two.

Edit - it's actually worse than I first thought, 3 against seeds, and it would probably have been better if Katy, Gabi or Naomi had drawn Sebov rather than EWS.
