I wouldn't say picking Gabi (who hasn't played in a while) as particularly smart either but for different reasons.

Sam just managed to beat the weather and get her match wrapped up and secure a day off tomorrow, as the rain was falling during the latter stages of the MTB and 2 qualifying matches have been carried over (they didn't get underway), so we won't find out until tomorrow who Sam faces.

I suspect that the Katy incident was frustration after getting  the chance to play on grass and getting the win, then not being able to play again.

I don't think Gabi is the right partner either, but we'll see how they get on.

I know EWS is rated on here so maybe it was just a bad day and yeah, I know on the forum there have been comments about singles players playing doubles and giving w/o if they go deeper into singles than expected (* hats off to Paire for playing singles, mens doubles and mixed at the FO!) or want to protect themselves but then I kinda also think...don't pair up with a singles player!? Maybe she had to but surely even 1 round is better than 0 rounds? Just one of those situations I guess that has no real good outcome. Perhaps not the best to publicly call her out on social media though for all to see...nothing wrong with a message in private.

I also suspect EWS was simply frustrated that her recent doubles partner who she has forged a very successful relationship with had not made it to the UK... then she partners with someone who shows immediately that she is not committed to playing doubles at all, whereas for Emily, its the area where she stands to re-enter the top 200 again. It doesn't appear Sofia S will make it to the grass, so something has done wrong with their scheduling.

On the ITF Website

Players should check the visa requirements of the country for each tournament they are entering at least 2 months in advance so they have all of the necessary documents to provide to submit a visa application.
The ITF and/or any Service Bureau is not responsible for any problems incurred with the issue of your VISA.

She could always approach Michael Gove on how to get round formal processes for getting a visa to a country which has certain rules in place.

On a serious note, there could well be an issue - georgia is non EU and so she would have had to apply for a Visa presumably, and no Visa Waiver in place one would imagine despite sharing St George in common. So it could take time and no idea what her background checks would throw up.

Having recently gone to the USA on an ESTA and thinking how long it took to get through Border Control (as we arrived they have various pods where you scan passports and fingers and photos) and think it is all speeded up but then you still face an hour in a queue for the man from Del Monte! Well, coming back into LHR, the queue which seemed to include everyone from all countries was enormous. The agent at the desk was v nice and chatted about how you get into his job (ex Copper) but the UK end for UK citizens took longer than getting into the US!

The Home Office claims that all visa applications are processed within 15 working days, ie 3 weeks. But I'm in a meeting now where some participants from Africa and Asia did not get their visas within that time period. If you want to pay for an expedited visa... it would probably cost more than a doubles participant would get for winning the tournament (ie +£1,000). The UK now also centralises visa application services, so for example if you want to travel to the UK from anyway in East Africa, you have to apply through the British Embassy in Pretoria, South Africa. So now factor in courier costs and time too. I (used to) get annoyed when it takes me 8-10 days from a visa service agency in London to travel to one of these countries, but I shall just be considering myself fortunate in the future.

Where did EWS call out Katy exactly? All I see is saying it was a shame on Twitter. Which it was and I dont see anything wrong with that.

Ems partnership with Katy was one of convenience - both had entered with different partners but neither pair were going to make the cut. So they swapped partners, the other pair got in directly, and Em and Katy got a late wildcard. It looked like it would be a good partnership - until Katy withdrew.

The only thing I saw on twitter was the same as Jaggy reported.
