Week 23 - ITF (W100) - Surbiton, Great Britain - Grass

That looks a very good effort by Emily. Unfortunately after taking the 2nd set TB she went *0-5 and then 1-7* down in the MTB.

Why put the Brits on the unstressed courts?!

Naomi is back on serve, 4-4*

But then is broken again to 15 and I think DFd on set point. 4-6.

Naomi loses 4 & 3, and that's the Brits out of qualifying in under three hours.

(Not that that in itself is surprising given the disparity in rankings)

Any court with a Brit on is going to be stressed!

Doubles draw is out, although not showing on the ITF site yet.
Wild cards for Beth/Eden, KatyD/EWS and Naiktha/Naomi - and Heather is in partnering Wickmayer

Doubles Draw is very strong again this year but good wild card selections I think. I did wonder if Em and Naomi might team up this year so interesting she's with Bains.

Allowing players to use their singles rankings to enter has closed the opportunity down to play quite a bit.

So it was Martincova the unknown withdrawal. She would have just missed out main draw entry so probably didn't fancy a double match after winning a W25 title 2 days ago. TWELVE Wimbledon entrants have ended up in a W100 draw, 3 of which have drawn Brits. Maria vs Diyas will also eliminate one.

They largely look fair draws although most, if not all, will be underdogs which would be expected given the field strength and 80% are MDWCs. A WC vs WC or another WC vs Q would have been nicer, but could maybe see a couple of wins there, a lot will obviously depend on who Katy draws, but I don't really look at them and think, ah well she's out, possibly Maia, but at least the likes of Riske, Rybarkiova and a few others were avoided. Lapko has largely been in abysmal form in 2019 and lost 4 and 2 to French jr Parry last week so I do have a bit of hope for Burrage.

So for the MD, Heather with on paper the best chance of progressing meets the highest ranked player first up... That's unfortunate. She's been playing better recently though, so let's hope she's on this one. Katy will be happy to face a qualifier, but the person will still be higher ranked than herself.
