Boys: French Open, clay (Week 23)

Some real youngsters in the last stages of the French Open Juniors.

In the boys, there's two Americans, both born 2003, Toby Kodat and Martin Damm.
As well as Rune from Denmark, also born 2003.
And Mochizuki, from Japan, also born 2003.

So four lads, all born 2003 with two and a half more years of juniors ahead of them, into the last four in a Junior Grand Slam.

That's very impressive....

The girls, who we often think of as staying less time in juniors and therefore being younger, are actually considerably older, with 2 x 2002 and 2 x 2001.

Leylah Fernandez has absolutely stormed to the final in the girl's event, barely breaking sweat.

Very interesting to hear about the pathway of her and her younger sister who, seemingly, were not helped one jot by the Canadian tennis federation because they didn't 'make the criteria'. When Leylah made the SFs of RG last year, she was one of only two Canadian players to even make the first round of a junior Grand Slam. And yet she got nothing. Yet another Canadian player who's done it outside the system. You've got to wonder.....

Quite surprised about that because she has had a number of WCs into big events (Katie B and Hev both beat her in WTA events last year), so thought she would have been highly thought of with the Federation. Her opponent in the final, Navarro, couldn't be more different as her dad Ben is a billionaire and owns the WTA Charleston Premier event (where his daughter got a WC earlier this year).

This is due to start at 10am UK, so think I will watch it, at least until the men's SF comes on. I see it's on Court 14. I love the fact Wimbledon's is always a very healthy crowd on Court 1 - that must be so special for the players.

Are all the other canadians making waves , such as FAA,  shapo,  andrescu,  raonic,  schmidt, etc. From the system or out with? Crazy coincidence if all or most are outside, presumably someone is doing something right ?!

Congratulations to Holger Rune who becomes the second Dane to win a Grand Slam this year (Clara Tauson won the Australian Open) - Holger beat Toby Kodat 6-3 6-7(5) 6-0. Leylah said before the final that she will not be playing Wimbledon.

She's concentrating on the Canadian ITF events in July. Bit of a shame.

Is Martin damm related to the ex ATP tour player of the same name who hailed from Czechoslavakia I think, reached top 50 or maybe higher?

Yes - one of the many following in the footsteps of one of their parents. Martin Damm Snr won a doubles grand slam (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Martin_Damm for more detail) and coaches Martin jnr
