Townsend's a bit of a strange one, as CD says, she has had her issues with the USTA in the past, but she's 23 now, has been in and around the top 100 for over 18 months, but still plays 90% of her matches in the US and only seems to venture out of North America for the slams and has very few warm up events in those continents:
I guess if a country is putting on constant W80 and W100 events throughout the year as well as the many WTA events that they do, and you like your home comforts, you can build a solid enough ranking and stay in your comfort zone, but if she played the likes of the Far East swing, Middle East double, Euro red clay events etc., and she had the ranking to at least get into Qs for those, you'd think that would develop her much more as a player and maybe a person.
What a difference 3 or 4 mins can make. Lottner on the brink of breaking to serve for the match and then broken for the first time in the set. Not the prettiest of matches, but job done, a landmark win and can move on to another winnable match.
