Weeks 22 & 23 - French Open, Paris - Clay

Jo played the big points incredibly well, to be fair.

Second set was a lot better.

First ever MD win at Roland Garros
Adds to a very profitable and unexpected clay campaign.
Anything else really is just icing from here on in.

I thought it was a dreadful match. Really poor from both.

But I'm glad Jo won. Lottner certainly didn't deserve to win either.

And I'm hoping it was just nerves on Jo's part, because of the stress of never having won a MD match here before.

Glad Jo has finally won a match here at Roland-Garros (and I didn't watch it, if it was that bad). And hope now that she has got that monkey off her back, she will play much better in the second round.

Jo's next opponent is tiny, just 5ft 2.

R128: Johanna KONTA (GBR) [26] 26 beat Antonia LOTTNER (GER) [Q] 149 (CH=128 25/6/18) 6-4 6-4

R64: Johanna KONTA (GBR) [26] 26 vs Lauren DAVIS (USA) [WC] 111 (CH:26 May 17)

Davis feels like a match she should win ? American, clay, outside top100?

I agree this was a dreadful match and Jo was all over the place. I felt the pressure of "never having won a match" was weighing heavily and credit to Jo that she was able to find a way to win. I'm hoping that now she's got that monkey off her back she can play with more freedom in the next round.

Does feel very winnable.

Though Davis at her best is good. Now 25 yo, she is a former JWR 3 and generally spent 2013 through to 2017 solidly in the top 100 with a CH 26 from May 2017.

I recall watching her epic Australian Open L32 match with Halep ( final set 15-13 to Halep ) which wasn't just ultimately survival of the fittest, it was largely a very good match. For whatever reasons the rest of her 2018 was awful and she seems to have been active.

Picked up a bit again this year and has had US clay ( green clay? ) 80K RU and 100K winner results in the last couple of months.

Leads Jo in overall RG MD wins, err 2 to 1.

Great that Jo has broken her duck here now; good luck in R2 :)

Jo  has now won at least one match at each of the Grand Slams and joins the late Elena Baltacha as the only Britons to achieve this feat in the 21st century.

Speaking of Heather- although it very much depends on the weather which isn't forecasted to be great - plays her doubles tomorrow.
