Week 18 - ITF (W60) Les Franqueses des Valles, Spain Hard

So it's either the feisty Frenchwoman Reix (327) or Estrella Cabeza Candela (378) up next for Jodie - they play tomorrow. Both are the wrong side of 30 (30 and 32) and neither are in great form. Candela has lost her last 5 matches stretching back to late October, whereas Reix has lost her last 3 stretching back to late February and is now at her lowest ranking since 2015 - she's always been ranked somewhere between 200-299 for the past 4 years. Big opportunity to go further.

I see Jodie has now withdrawn from Kurume W60 w/c 13th May and isn't in any other list that week. We won't find out until Thursday if she intends to play w/c 20th, but other than maybe Jerusalem W25 (hard) at a push, there's no reasonably nearby hard court events that week and it's not really worth her attempting clay this year, so it wouldn't surprise me if she plans to give herself 3 weeks off to fully prepare for the grass and then give Surbiton and Nottingham/Manchester a really good go whilst there's nothing at all to defend.

Jodie is underranked. She has been beating 200-300 ranked players all year, so is only a matter of time until she gets down to low 220's.
The ability is there, sometimes the head isn't.

Yes that's Jodie W4, L2 against 200-300 ranked players this year.

And indeed W3, L2 against players ranked higher than 200, winning her 3 matches against players ranked 150-199.

Has the odd off day, losing matches she probably shouldn't. That head? And against players ranked 300+ she is W13, L4.

So over the year to date, in total W20, L8.

Re earlier thoughts about whether this latest win against WR 200 counts as a top 200 win, maybe we should ask Tara

This goes back to some twitter fun when Tara was unconvinced that she had become a top 200 player when she reached WR 200.

Fair enough, in part she wanted a ranking starting with 1 which she soon after achieved. But the general forum consensus at the time was that WR 200 is a top 200 player.  Essentially what are the rankings of the 200 top 200 players? Well, WR 1 to err WR 200. QED.

So on that basis Jo is now W4, L2 against top 200 players this year.

PS: All of the above is based on Ponchet being WR 200. I have just noticed that that is her ranking from last week and that she is now WR 195. So even more clearly ( not that it wasn't before ) another top 200 win  biggrin

Ah, but when....

You've got her finishing the year below 350 so let's hope she goes for a more optimistic finish than that smile

C'mon, Alex !

I'm hoping Jodie just keeps soaring so that those that had her at the lower end of their predicted GB top 10 don't score much either, along with those of us who err missed her out all together. Certainly way above GB #7, WR 270 would be good

I like when ongoing support for a young Brit ties in with selfish prediction contest thoughts

Yes, CD definitely has the jump us here at the moment... I knew I had Jodie in my top 10, but was convinced I had her higher than only the #10 position where I do have her, and had her higher than WR 357. It's interesting how some things can change quite fast. It's just 4 months into the year, but I have Fran at #9, and there is no way now that I think anyone could see Fran as having a chance to finish the year ahead of Jodie.

Yeah, so maybe that head of Jodie's... is not doing too badly under Alex's tutelage. wink

It's crazy. I stupidly edited my post late and replaced her with Fran at #10, but as it stands now, I genuinely think there's a reasonable chance that she ends the season as GB #5. There were some signs at the back end of last year, but her 2019 thus far has been outstanding, and long may it continue...

It wasn't really the point I was making but tx, Michael. :)
However, I was hoping - and am still hoping - that there is some contagion effect to Freya (nothing to do with predictions).
They train together, are friends (seemingly) and i can't help feeling that Freya is in a better place at the moment and on the brink of a big jump up. Would be nice....

Eden v Katy will be interesting here......

I was just checking and Bet365 have 11 matches listed here today and 8 being streamed, but the big one wink is one of 3 that are not, unfortunately. Katy 4/7, Eden 5/4 (opened up at 4/6 vs 11/10) - Katy would have been a much bigger favourite this time last year.

What's the easiest way of finding our predictions?  Whenever I try to look I can never find them.
