Other events - week 8

In Auray, young Ben has just won his SF 6-4 6-4 against Frechet.

Another polished display, very level-headed, good control, playing his own game.

As Ben is born Nov. 2007, he must be one of the youngest players there, which is even more impressive.

He'll play Yosh in the final (Yosh beat Frechet recently in another big U12 event so presumably Yosh is the stronger player - he certainly looked it today, if one's comparing the two French kids).

Thanks for the reports CD I saw some of Mingge and Hephzibah's matches plus the end of Benjamin's Hephzibah's match seemed to be the standout of the three, and had the power and variety of a much older age group match

Yes, completely agree David - Hephzibah's match was the stand-out match today - both girls playing very well and certainly at a much higher/older style of level. Will be interesting to see how the Japanese girl does against Shanice Roignot tomorrow.
Impressed though with Ben, especially in terms of the maturity of his match, given his age.

At Auray, only saw the third set, but the girls' final was an absolute cracker, a brilliant level of tennis, with real power, technique, strategy, athleticism, etc - way better than you'd get in ITF 15k qualis say, not to mention nearly all other junior levels. The French girl ended up winning the third-set TB (helped by a questionable overrule by the umpire) but the Japanese girl (who beat Hephzibah in three) was right there up until then when she rather crumbled.

The boys have just started with GB's young Ben Gusic Wan against another French player.

It's a different level of tennis - physically, they are both very slight, little boys, and haven't started maturing yet. Ben has started way better than Yosh (the French kid) and leads 3-0.

Auray, World top U12 event

Little Ben Gusic Wan took the match 6-2 2-6 6-3

A very composed, competent, quality performance. As before, an excellent lucidity on the court for one his age. Used the full range of his weapons.

A real pleasure to watch.

Well done Ben - he lost to the same opponent in the TE Winter Cup earlier in the month. From the few games I saw there was, as usual for the French junior events, a big crowd and good atmosphere

Yes, as you say, a big crowd, mostly for the French kid, obviously.

Interesting to see the numbers watching on Youtube too - there were 550 viewers at one point, which I thought was pretty decent.

This tweet from Alex Lisiecki reveals that there was further success in Auray for the British squad in doubles, fair play and other categories

Just to bump Ben's title here, where he took the title, in real style, and impressed everyone watching, including me (although not quite everyone - there's the typical French comment on his youtube link - 'Ben basically doesn't do anything, just gets the ball back' - yeah.....)

And now has won the U12 Orange Bowl
