RE: Match Fixing

So, about three-quarters of all dodgy betting is in tennis.....

There is a program tomorrow on BBC Parliament (freeview 131) on match fixing at 09.45. (including umpires). I saw bits of it one night before falling asleep. It was interesting and it is well worth watching.

Basically MPs/other brits in high places are questioning members of the tennis world about what they are doing about the match fixing problem. Chris Kermode the head of the ATP was being questioned amongst others.

this NOT match fixing but did anyone see the Medvedev incident last night?

he supposedly said (in a joking way, apparently, some say, others say it was cross) to the chair umpire 'ok, I know the guy's your friend but....' (with reference to his opponent and a slightly dodgy line call/overule).

And was then promptly disqualified.

OK - I see that some people think it was racism.

Which is not the way I see the youtube video really - it is possibly 'nationalistic' but it might be racist, or have overtones, I guess it's a judgement thing, and maybe you had to be there to here the exact tone....

But....

I think you'd need to know Medvedev's personality and how fluent he is in english, to have even the slightest clue as to quite what he was implying. Seems a big leap to disqualify him given so much uncertainty, unless the officials want to disqualify one player per day per event for something said to an official.

Even if he is fluent in English it easy to imagine that the implication of certain phrases would not occur to him.

If a player wants to throw a match fine , its only them and a bookie that suffer , so stop taking bets Mr bet 335 Mr hill , Victor Chandler , I find it hard to find sympathy for all involved after all betting is a mugs game

People who bet on the player who throws the match also suffer.

And a sport just loses so much, well most certainly for me, if and when you question whether what you are watching is for real with both players / teams wanting to win.

Fortunately the rewards for success are such ( probably really far too unbalanced ) that I have no feeling of that at least with top level tennis.

I put a link a couple of days ago in the 'ITF Prize Money' thread to an article in the Daily Mail outlining proposed changes to the circuit as a result of the investigation into match fixing.  Basically aiming to reduced the futures tour drastically and have about 500 players in professional tennis playing only in well supervised venues.  As BiS commented, no tennis players = no problems!!
