There were kids from the High Performance squad on court first playing a few competitive points.
Good start by Maia, broke in the first game by holding her own from the back while her opponent started more aggressively but made errors when she got to the net. Maia clinched the break with a flashing cross court FH winner and held for 2-0...
Edit - broke to 30 for 3*-0 with an inch perfect lob and a sizzling backhand winner. Very promising so far!!

Maia moves to 5-1*, recovering from 0-40 and aided by a pinpoint BH down the line, an inch perfect smash and a questionable looking call against the Russian...
There were occasional moments when Savinykh demonstrated why she was once as high as 99, but on the whole she is making far too many UEs. Maia in contrast seems to be taking pretty much everything thrown at her and compensating for her relative lack of power with greater consistency, accuracy and variety than her opponent. Keep it up Maia!
Maia broke for 2-0 but now Savinykh is starting to get the big guns out....and a couple of her shots just caught the back line taking Maia by surprise.
Back on serve, 6-1 2-1*...
