Between Covid and injuries I think he has done pretty well to get onto the periphery of Aus qualifying. Not sure it would be a good idea to go given the issues he has had but equally you never know what life is going to throw at you and if opportunities arise it's sometimes silly not to grab them.

So Jack finished 2021 as GB#7.

Here's the breakdown of his year. His standout performance was reaching the QF of Queens in June, meaning over a third of his points came from ATP500 tournament. The rest came from Challenger or ITF events. The three ITF tournament wins which contribute 17.6% of his points came either from 2019 or 2020.

What are thoughts/what have people heard about why Jack didnt enter Aus Open qualies? Judging from the players around his ranking would be have just made in? I noticed he wasnt on the entry list whilst Ryan Peniston just below him was though. He seems likely to be the kind who would have been booster by playing bigger matches and it seemed like an obvious carrot to aim for at the end of last year

With the reduced match playing opportunity pre qualifying, his injuries/illnesses last year and the fact that he will get other opportunities to enter GS it makes more sense to play elsewhere

Perhaps he doesn't need the money on offer in the slam qualies.

As he's only seeded 8th clearly there were several others who also chose not to go. I would guess it's too much hassle for too little potential reward

dont think he was ranked height enough too get in . Their are only 128 places in qualifying and he is ranked

262 .

After last year was so tough I think he could have a breakthrough year this year .

Jack was ultimately high enough ranked that he would have got in.

On the relevant 20/12/21 ranking date :
265. Draper - not entered
266. Watanuki - got into qualifying
267. Vavassori - got into qualifying
268. Peniston - left as the final first alt

Clearly he could never have counted on it until very late on. So combined with what emmsie mentioned I think it very understandable that he chose to stay in Europe.

Probably why he was shouting so much in the challenger semi he played late in the year - probably knew that winning that would have probably made the trip worth it

A little shout out to Jack Draper, age 20, who hit new CHs this week, in both singles and doubles:

Singles: ATP 201
Doubles: ATP 477

No mention here that he won his first ever challenger this year . Hoping he swaps Challengers for tour qualifying in the not too distant future .

Be interesting too see how he does when he is not playing indoors . He game seems perfect for indoor hard or grass .
