Boys & Girls: 2018 US Open, hard - Grade A (Week 36)

Singles honours to Aidan's conqueror Thiago Seyboth Wild (3 sets - pushing Jack down a spot in the Chengdu race) and Xiyu Wang. The Chinese girl is ranked WTA279 following 3 consecutive 25K finals but was pushed for a set by Clara Burel, taking it on a tiebreak before running away with the second

Exactly right as she turns 16 in November. My mistake, but plenty of opportunity ahead. It is the pattern of repeated progression in elite level tournaments that is encouraging on a background of rapid adaptation to and progression at 15K.

Kevin Mitchel in yesterdays times referenced Laura as the last time a British junior had achieved so consistently at this level, I see more similarity with Kyle (obviously not in respect to doubles where his record was outstanding) but more in terms of being there or there abouts in singles consistently with a focus on and dedication to practice and incremental improvement. Less banged up here than at Wimbledon Juniors? There, she had played plenty of very high level womens tennis in the run, up a real step up from 15K, plenty of opportunity but difficult to listen to your body and step back when carrying the odd knock. Overall in terms of facilitating transition to adult Tennis I think the balance was about right in terms of the wildcards offered. Here she was probably sapped by her performance in the previous round. At 15 that is not a bad thing perhaps a marker of common sense? Hopefully no drips and emergency intravenous rehydration in the juniors?

I think she has had a really good year which has been really enjoyable to follow, a nice balance of consistent winning and being pushed to the max in defeat, plenty of excellent experience at 15, not only in terms of playing but also in terms of managing the workload to learn from for the future.

Just looked back to the 64 girls who competed at Junior Wimbledon in 2008 when Laura won and found that the player who has subsequently had the highest singles world ranking was none other than Johanna Konta! To be honest remember Laura's win and Jo being decidedly under the radar.

Just to note that Clara, who inflicted a heavy defeat on Emma in the US Open juniors, has just gone on to win the 2018 ITF Junior Masters girls championship.
