Boys & Girls: 2018 US Open, hard - Grade A (Week 36)

Emma is first up at 5pm on Court 17 so hopefully we'll get to see that.

(11) Clara Burel (FRA) v Emma Raducanu

I've never been blown away by Burel's tennis so am hopeful Emma will come through.

Also, Clara's been having a slightly tricky time - she did great at the start of the year (made the Aussie Open juniors final) but more recently she's changed coaches, did pretty poorly at RG and not been getting the sort of results she wanted.

She tells a good story though of her Bac which was this summer. It was a bit of a struggle, juggling tennis and studies and she failed her Bac by a small margin which means you're in the group that gets called in for an oral examination, whereby you can then be upgraded to getting the bare pass.

But the day of the oral exams (the rattrapage) Clara was in London for Wimbly juniors (and you can't defer it). But suddenly she noticed that there had been an error and her sport mark hadn't been included in the Bac total - every student has to do sport as part of their bac. Now, the sport mark is only a really small coefficient but because she'd got 19/20 (not surprisingly!), it was just enough to just push her over the total pass mark. (Always check the computer!)

She then made the last 16 at Junior Wimbly before losing very easily to the same girl who thrashed Emma.

Like Emma, she's not played competitive tennis over summer, taking holiday and rest, and then going on an intensive course hosted by the FFT for the girls playing the US Open juniors.

She's a year older than Emma and her adult tennis results have been nowhere as impressive either.

Emma is the headline story, including interview comments on the ITF site - www.itftennis.com/news/290852.aspx
Aidan also resumes at 5pm
Look out for other boys results, as Jack Draper is currently in the last qualifying spot for the Masters, but will be knocked out into an alternate slot by a win for either Musetti or Nakashima in the quarter finals

Thanks for the Emma link, David.

It still seems strange that Jack ( and George ) didn't enter here.

I couldn't watch any of that - was Clara a lot better than I'd expected or was Emma just not at the races at all ???

Is it just our players that suffer from wild inconsistency, or the difference between a highly and not so highly ranked player?

No. On the main tour, to give some examples are Garbine Muguruza and former no.1 Ana Ivanovic for two on how to be inconsistent.
