I was great to see Dan come through in the end last night, but more important for me was the early form. I watched from 3-0 up in the first set and for the next 6 games, I saw the real Dan for the first time since before his suspension. Some might say "it was only Tommy Paul" but Dan's shot making and whole demeanor were fantastic. For me that was the first sign that the real Dan is on the way back.
Decent draw, but Ernesto Escobedo poses a Clear and Present Danger. IGMC
Escobedo beat Dan 18 months ago in miami in 3 sets, at time he was ranked in top 50 against Dan around 100. Looks like he's fallen a lot since for presumably injury reasons although not sure.
Bob thanks for the comments re. Dan, I'm so pleased that he is able to play at his previous level! Your description suggests that he has the hunger that may have been missing from the previous weeks. The Livesteam catchup is still not working, I'd so love to watch.
I only go to the cinema once a decade and even then it's under duress, so film references go over my head....
I remember watching Dan beating Halys at the NTC several years ago. I think Mark Hilton did a great job of getting Dan's head in the right place and keeping in there, I think Dan would have fared much better if Mark was still in his corner. Pleased for Mark now that he is earning loads more than he made on tour.
I have tinnies in the fridge, I'm all set for some proper tennis tonight!
I watched Dan last night. There was definitely a purple patch where he was playing some excellent tennis which was good to see. I wonder if he might have been guilty of trying to mix it up a bit too much towards the end of the second set.
JonH, I think you might have got those rankings the wrong way round at the time of the Miami match. I've just checked - Dan was 43 and Escobedo, 108. Escobedo did rise to well inside 100 not long after, and agree, it could well be a tough match for Dan.
