Week 33 - Challenger - Odlum Brown Van Open, Vancouver, Canada ($100,000) (hard)

Yes, better to win in straight sets but if not then losing the first set then overall winning the next two sets pretty cleanly is about the next best option. Though steve is right that you are putting yourself at risk for later ( 6-3 in the final set here was just one break up ).

More generally yes it is all about the win and some players ( Kyrgios for example even on days when he is focussed on winning the match ) can let sets go. That is surely though generally from well down, not in a set where 5-4 down before the final game of the set as here with Evo. So no doubt he lost that final game and set fair and square rather than anything tactical on this occasion.

On a tangental note, I have said before I have a bit of a problem with UTR giving quite a bit of credit to competitive losses. The exact details I don't know but they do make the point themselves as a supposed plus that players are thus encouraged to fight for every point. Now as a pro that doesn't always make sense, and the win is indeed the thing. Though I can see that maybe at younger ages it is a good thing to encourage for such as focus and concentration so I come and go a little bit on that one.

I'm surprised that Dan is getting so much criticism for the win - especially as I don't think anyone actually saw the match so we don't really know what happened? I don't think it's that unusual for a lower ranked player to come out firing on all cylinders and playing well above their level, and the first set can easily get away from you before you know it. Surely the point here is that Dan turned things around pretty convincingly - working out what he needed to do, nullifying what was working before and getting the win - job done!

Dan has started well. 3-0 up.

Never rated Tommy much, even when he was doing very well as an 18/19 year-old. Though he seems a really nice young man.

Make that 5-0* up. Brilliant lob on the run to bring up the double break. Dan looks fully focused tonight. Let's hope it stays that way.

Dan clearly setting his sights on a double bagel. He is soooo fired up for this. Best I have seen him play since his comeback began.

6-0 3-0*

I thought Paul had quite a powerful though rather loose game that would tighten over time and he might do very well but not really been happening though he was out for a few months.

And I'd rather that he didn't start it happening now as he finally wins a game then breaks to love.

Dan leads 6-0 3-2*

Well that wasn't supposed to happen. Dan was unplayable for so long but Paul has fought back and eventually taken the 2nd set breaker 12-10. So we are into a 3rd set and my live stream has died.

Hadnt checked the score since Evo went 3-0 up in the second. Still trying to figure out how on earth he went from that to serving to stay in the match!
