Dan needing 3 sets to beat a guy who has never been in the top 500 does not fill me with confidence for the rest of the tournament of even the year. It is a shame the qualies aren't streamed....
Took a set to get going but 6-0, 6-3 from that point is pretty convincing. His target is Aussie Open qualys which I think is realistic. He is not a player with destructive weapons his success prior to his ban was the result of every part of his game being as good as it can be, and fit with his head in the right place! That will all take time

Yes, you're right.
The only positive thing about it (over and above, at least he won) is that first sets can often be weird - many coaches think that having won with Dan's score is fine - it's like the first set was an extended warm-up and then you won 6-0 6-3. Whereas if the first two sets were inverted, that would be far more worrying.
Now that might just be looking at the bright side....
Dan needs to win his next match and finally to qualify at his 3rd attempt this North American swing. Get into the MD and I think his competitive juices might be fired up more.
He is still finding his feet obviously, but the motivational element has always been important for him, which is why his coaching set up really matters too.
In Dans interview with Mike Cation last week Im sure he said he has his coach with him this week. Cant remember where he said he was training now but its wherever George Loffehagen is.

yeah , it's David felgate ( I commented in my deleted post above but deleted as I was repeating news bob had reported in dans individual thread ) and they're planning Istanbul next. Hope they get paid in euros whilst they are playing there!

I'm not sure that I can agree with the sentiment that it doesn't matter if you lose the 1st set. Yes, getting the W is the most important thing, but tennis matches and sets within them can turn on the finest margins. At the business end of a tight set, a dodgy call, net cord or some other outrageous fortune can leave a player checking flights home when they should be steeling themselves for a decider.
But I absolutely don't criticise you for looking on the bright side!

Euros or $ would be preferable! ( Turkish Lira is under huge pressure for those who don't read the business section). A good point though JonH - I'm sure that not all levels of tournament pay prize money in Euro or USD.
Good opportunity to get out there a week early for warm weather practice and get a great deal on accommodation and food (and beer??!!)

I'm not saying that it's good to lose the first set.
Two sets is good !
I'm saying that many coaches are happier if you win 4-6 6-0 6-3 than if you win 6-4 0-6 6-3 - it shows concentration and good play for two consecutive sets, and the first one they can put down to warm-up.
It makes a lot of sense to me. Dan is also pretty tactical in that on a number of occasions I have seen him conserve his energies for the next set (so to speak) when the first has slipped passed him.
