Week 33 - Challenger - Odlum Brown Van Open, Vancouver, Canada ($100,000) (hard)

Amazing!!! Woke up just after midnight and thought maybe I'd check the result. Couldn't help but have a quick look at livestream and got sucked into the match. What a fight from Dan. So pleased for him. Now I really must get back to bed! Good luck Hev!

Great match Dan was down and out, thought he was lucky with a mini break point in TB that looked out to me and Kubler as well, but no taking away from a magnificent performance. Some of those backhands were sublime finding he deep end of the court just about every time. The lob was inch perfect as well.

Based on the last two matches hes playing top 50 stuff even when dead on his feet. Delighted for him and two figures up to the Tory Toffs in British Tennis who were happy for him to disappear.

Onwards and upwards, target should be direct entry to Aus Open. No points to defend if he doesnt make top 150 by year end at least it will be a surprise.

That was a quite brilliant match, recommend watching it on Livestream anyone who didnt stay up. Such fight, looked knackered from midway thru 2nd set, but somehow always found a way. The match point he saved was brilliant tennis from both players and some superb lobs too that must have broken Kubler's heart, can't remember him missing one.

Going to sleep now with a big smile on my face! smile

Wow, the SF and Final here were brilliant to watch. I thought he was a goner more than once today but he clearly wants it SO much! Never plays it safe on the big points either, really goes after them, it's brilliant to see

Having won his 6th Challenger singles title (his first since he beat Cam to win Aptos 2 years and 5 days ago), Dan now goes outright 2nd on the most ATP Challenger singles titles won by Brits this century list bit.ly/challfin (I know the position in that table is slightly devalued by the fact that the very best Brits don't stick around in Challengers long enough to win that many, but it's still quite an achievement)

Evo is also the 2nd oldest Brit to win a Challenger singles title this century (James was also 28 when he won his last title in Bangalore in 2015 but he was a few months older)

Today's win takes him up to GB no. 4 ahead of Liam and James and easily back into the ATP top 250. As I imagine someone has already mentioned in this thread in anticipation, he has virtually made sure of a qualifying place for the Aus Open (his stated aim for the rest of 2018 in his recent interview with Mike Cation) already, and probably a place in qualifying for RG and perhaps even Wimbledon too, though I imagine the aims have now gone up to being seeded in qualifying or even being a direct entrant for one or all of those.

All in all, a very productive and fun week, he must be cream crackered now!

Good on Evo for already being close to sealing the deal on avoiding the Wimbledon QWC play-offs

Great point Steven on how he at the very least plays big points on their merits, maybe indeed being more attacking against some players who become a bit becalmed in such points. Though Kubler today also pretty much went for it. Great match.

Just saw a tweet by the atp Challenger tour saying its lukes 3rd Challenger doubles win of the year with 3 different partners on 3 different surfaces. I then was looking this up on Lukes itf profile. I also note he has won a Futures double, Challengers and ATP world tour titles this year. Cant be that often that you get a player having won a tournament in all 3 levels in the same season.

I missed the earlier doubles final so well done to Luke and Neal.

Re Luke winning titles with different partners that's good, as is he apparently being up to a further CH 76, but it would be good to see him settled in a partnership, of course a winning partnership. Seemed he basically decided that that wouldn't be David O'Hare any more and he talked about teaming up with Jonny O'Mara which of course he did and pretty successively, particularly initially. Now after such a short time together ( and Jonny having ended his partnership with Scott Clayton ) they have apparently split up for whatever reasons. Where to now for Luke, and indeed Jonny?

Congrats Dan!  I'm in rural France and a connection to log onto this board is all I can hope for. Would have just loved to watch his last two matches, they seem to have been top level and exciting affairs.

I think Dan had what he needed this week.  Loads of tennis and loads of matches!  I think he needs to work on his serve from what I saw from previous matches this week and from what other posters have said here (i'm not able to check the stats).  He has some time to do that before his next match!

He's up at 226 in the rankings this morning, this is very decent with only 10 counting tourmaments.

AS before, waking up, not looking at the result, and reading through the list of posts in order is just great - the ups and downs of the match are all there

So thanks for the posts.

And ruddy brilliant result for Evo - in extremis - after not a great start to his US tour. Just made up for him.

(NB you must be unlucky with your connection, stevemcqueen, I could not be more rural (truly pommé-ed, as they'd say) and the connection is great - but with the hour ahead and a really late night Saturday just couldn't make it and left Dan safe in the arms of the board )
