Week 33 - Challenger - Odlum Brown Van Open, Vancouver, Canada ($100,000) (hard)

I honestly think the drugs ban could prove to be a blessing in disguise for Dan. His enforced absence clearly made him appreciate what he had before and he seems more fired up and motivated than ever in his matches.

Don't think it'll be too long before he's competing in ATP main draws again, even if as a qualifier to begin with.

Brilliant result to wake up to. Fell asleep somewhere during the 2nd and thought the game was getting away from him.

I dunno, he seemed pretty fired up and motivated during the first half of 2017...he even won some ATP matches on clay!

What's done is done. Roll on 2019 and top 50

Congrats indeed to Dan who is now up 84 places to 226 in the rankings and GB #4, overtaking Liam (239) and James (248).

I also thought Dan was pretty fired up and motivated first half of 2017, and playing probably his most consistent tennis ever at the time. But it sets him a target of what he knows he can achieve, and potentially surpass. Looks like he should make the Aus Open qualifiers safely now, and it will be interesting to see how much of the Asian circuit he takes in, which is where he can most easily continue to push his ranking upwards between now and the end of the year - as well as put a bit more money in the bank, which after his year of not earning will no doubt also be helpful to him.

Really good to see Dan's determination and fighting spirit. 90 points and $14,400 is a good week's work.

Edit: - Plus the 5 points for qualifying !

Congrats Dan!  I'm in rural France and a connection to log onto this board is all I can hope for. Would have just loved to watch his last two matches, they seem to have been top level and exciting affairs.

I think Dan had what he needed this week.  Loads of tennis and loads of matches!  I think he needs to work on his serve from what I saw from previous matches this week and from what other posters have said here (i'm not able to check the stats).  He has some time to do that before his next match!

He's up at 226 in the rankings this morning, this is very decent with only 10 counting tourmaments.

Yes, his serve seems to be a bit inconsistent. But from what I saw and the stats it was working not bad yesterday, particularly in the last two sets. Overall it was 14 aces, 6 DFS and 55% first serves in and quite often big when he needed it. I would like to have seen a speed gun for some of these serves. For not the biggest of guys he has always been able to serve pretty big but some of these seemed massive. Probably just would have liked that first serve % in a bit higher.

One of the things I commented on when I saw Dan play in Barcelona in 2017, was how much he was enjoying his tennis at that time.  He was fired up, completely focused and yet relaxed and smiling at the same time.

It really is good to have him back competing.

The standard in the first set was outstanding - from both players.

Yes, well done Evo. Not sure what the air quality was in Vancouver last night but currently it is extremely high risk due to wildfires in BC . Have just come from that part of the world and it was not good in the last week. Playing strenuous sport is about the worst thing to do also. Hope Evo and all other Brits that played are now breathing clean air somewhere, and have no lasting effects.

A comment by Bouncy to round off his column in today's Metro looking ahead to the USO:

Dan Evans had no ranking when he returned from his drugs ban in April, but he has just won a high-class Challenger event in Vancouver and he's world 226.  The ATP won't be keen to make him its coveted Comeback Player of the Year, but the way the Birmingham man's playing, he may have to be considered!

That would be a thing - if Dan can push on in the 4-6 events he might play before end of season,  he could get into the mid 100's ranking wise and really give them a headache - I suspect where he is now probably isnt enough on its own but you never know!
