So instead of making the Davis Cup bi-annual, which I thought was a fairly good idea, from 2020 we might have three or more annual team competitions:
1. Davis Cup
2. ATP World Cup
3. Laver Cup
ATP World Cup aiming for January pre-aussie open, Davis Cup in November but aiming for September, Laver Cup in September and Federer (who partially owns the Laver Cup) wants to fight off the Davis Cup switching.
Also interesting that the ITF have offered $5m/year of Kosmos money to the ATP for 1000 ATP points to the winning team players in the Davis Cup. However the ATP have said that's not enough money. The ATP have also already contracted with the Australian Federation to host their World Cup in January, I presume replacing the Hopman cup.

2 out of these 3 can't persist. DC heritage and that ruddy great pot will make it out last the others I'm betting. Annual is ok for me because those top nations will only be playing once or twice a year mostly with a huge gap between qualy and finals. It's not enough for my nations tennis fix. Hoping the september switch comes off, feb to november is too much of a gap. Stuff the Laver Cup, what a nonesense that was.. The minute the big guns don't turn up it'll be dead because there is no other reason to go. They can't recreate a Ryder Cup in tennis because the DC exists. The only chance another nations or continental championship has is if the DC finishes.
The finals in 2019 and 2020 will be held in Madrid
Travel and Hotel advice may be on offer
September is over so I am back online.
From what I have seen, it looks like the 2019 "Piquet" Cup (I refuse to call it the DC) will be held at the Caja Mágica in Madrid - dates to be confirmed. As you will nearly all know, I have been to Madrid several times for the ATP Masters event.
Whenever I go, I strongly recommend the Hotel Praga Madrid.
https://www.hotelmadridpraga.com/en/
It is only about 5 minutes (or 8 euros) away from the venue by taxi, or if you are feeling like a morning stroll, there is a lovely 30 minute walk along the river straight to the stadium. The hotel is excellent quality and was always reasonably priced - although I haven't been for a couple of years now.
Breakfast is great, but if you want to save a bit of cash, there is a morning cafe bar about 3 doors away where you can get a "tostada" with a juice or coffee for a couple of euros.
It's very early days of course but I just thought I would give a heads up while I think about it. When the time comes, I may be willing to try and organize a "group booking" which could mean some discount, if there is interest on here or from any of the AMFF readers who are cross referencing with this site as well.
Good to see you back Bob! How did you manage being away?
Wasn't easy but did seem to get a lot more done.
Interesting..... I did wonder.....what actually did you cut out? i.e. were you using the computer/internet but purely for work?
Yes. It was basically social media that went including Twitter and here (with a couple of exceptions). I still used the internet for emails and work related matters and then used the spare time to even get my house redecorated.
"Serious doubts over participation of top players at the inaugural Davis Cup Finals in November 2019. Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic both refused to commit at this stage despite the offer of a wild card, and now Alexander Zverev has ruled himself out."
With steven tweeting:
"So those who guessed that Switzerland and Serbia would probably get first refusal on the Davis Cup wild cards were right after all, it seems ..."
And from a different tweeter:
"On his latest podcast John Wertheim mentioned that he has heard the money is now in doubt - not as much available as was originally alluded to apparently. Wonder if that is linked to the appearance - or lack thereof - the top stars."
