I have been surreptitiously provided this tip-off:
"Someone asked in the Woking thread about watching the comparison between that event and Chiswick next week: Chiswick is massively the stronger of the 2, and easily the strongest of the 8 $25K held in the last 2 weeks. It is exactly as strong as the $25K+H held in Germany last week. Clay events are generally considerably more competitive by ranking than hard court events at equivalent levels, so Chiswick is bucking that trend.
Indeed, Chiswick is about as strong as last weeks $60K in Lexington, and noticably stronger than the only $60K this week to publish it's MD thus far. Chiswick shares with Woking a very strong top 8 seeds, except this week, the accompanying MD DA's are tighter than last week. Chiswick's median of non-seeds is higher than was the median of the seeded players in last weeks $25K in Fort Worth."
Maia gets last week's finalist, and the women who beat her last week quite easily, so that's a bit unfortunate.
Sam gets the junior (2000 born) WTA 200 or so player so fingers crossed that a bit of Sam's experience and nouse will cause her problems.....
Beth gets the 34 year-old qualifier - she used to be top 200 but it's a fair way back now - that's got to be a decent draw.
Irina Ram is a solid French player, always at the 300/350 mark or there abouts, but no more - clearly she'll be the favourite against Emily App but it's certainly playable.
Emily Arb gets your classic young Spanish girl who's only 18 and top 450 but never really played juniors. However, her ranking seems more based on a few excellent 15k last year than anything much this year. Go, Em !
And tricky draw fro Jodie against the savvy Turkish woman, ex WTA 60. But she's not 60 now so go for it
Yes, unfortunate for Maia - hope Jorovic is a bit tired now!
Beth's opponent lost 1&1 to Ramialison last week (after thrashing 2 Brits), so seems to be some way off her former top 200 standard.
Emily App has actually beaten Ramialison before, in a 3rd set tiebreak in the QFs of the 15K on Martinique in January, so there's some hope there.
Emily Arb's opponent did play some junior events and actually got beaten 3&3 by Emily in a Grade 1 event in Villena back in 2015, though obviously the 2-year age gap would have been more of a factor then than now.

Dead jealous
Have a lovely day - and all updates much appreciated (when you've got time....)
Nice place to watch tennis. Very hot in the sun though.
Emily lost her opening service game, but I would expect her to turn it round quite quickly - provided she doesn't get too defensive.
Sam is looking good - much harder hitting from both players.
Just had a word with Beth and her coach.
Sam looks very good, and was almost home when I walked past. Emily not having a good day - the better player, but still lost badly. She has the usual support team with her.

Thanks for the reports! Sam won the first 9 points of the 2nd set and went 3-0 up but has since been pegged back to 4-4, unfortunately. Pity about Emily.
Edit: Zavatska wins her 4th game in a row and will serve for the 2nd set
Make that 5 games in a row 6-1 4-6

Jorovic is proving far too good for Maia, but dorsnt actually look any better than most of the other girls here. Maia can't do a lot right at the moment.
The game on the adjoining court is very entertaining though - can't see to spell the names in this sun.
Whew, Sam finally holds her second service game of the set to love, and crawls across the line 2 sets to 1, 6-1 4-6 6-3, in a match were increasingly neither player could hold serve.
Sam could really do with these points, as she loses a total of 15 points in the next two weeks for reaching the L16 and QF at Woking and Chiswick respectively last year. So far this year she has recovered just 7 of those 15 points, with a first round loss at Woking and now here qualifying and winning this first round match. Her route to the QF though is going to lie via the winner of Lissey vs Ella Taylor's match, so at least one Brit is now guaranteed to reach the QF here.
Maia has pulled out of her doubles match (at least, I assume it was her and not her partner), so presumably she wasn't completely healthy and that might explain why her singles loss was quite so abject.
