RE: Girls: Junior International Roehampton, grass - Grade 1 (Week 27)

Nell won in three.

I has a great full day there today, saw all the girls bar Morgan.

The boys really took the gold star, all of them really competitive and of the level. Some of our girls, on the other hand, looked a bit far off.

But three excellent wins, and some other very good matches.

If any one has any specific questions, please ask.

Did you find out any news about our 7 missing top 10 ranked players?

7 out of 10 ? Is it that many?

Sorry, learned nothing ! Useless, I know ....

Emma Rad was there, looking fine.

But I had been wondering where is Esther Adeshina? And Eliz Maloney? And Ali Collins? (As well as some others, and then the ones that I must missed)

Just to say, the place had the feel of a cattle market.

There were SO many huddles of US college coaches, reps, contingents and players - and everywhere you went there were 'deals' being discussed - way more than I remember from previously.

I think it is 6 out of the top 10 ranked missing.

In ranking order: Raducanu, Erin Richardson, Adeshina, Loughlan, Collins and Fischer.

Clearly Fran Jones too but she isn't in our top 10 ranked juniors these days.

Heath, Allen, Martins and Bissett are/were involved.

Incidentally Amarni Banks will probably be GB top 10 when the new rankings come out. But we know where she's been - winning a G4 in Tunisia.

Though of course the question does still remain regards at least some of them.

Good to see the younger girls resting injuries, 15 year olds hopefully with long careers ahead of them. Good wins for Gemma Sasha and Nell

Yes. It does seem strange that last year at junior Wimbly  there were wildcards for Eliz,  Ali , Esther  and Anna. So these were four top prospects to be nurtured. And there is no sign of them this week (or for a while for certain....).injuries? Studies? Given up tennis?

I believe Esther is injured and Anna has committed to LSU.

Thanks, RedSquirrel.

Any idea about Eliz - she seems to have completely dropped off the radar?

Last year three Brit girls made it to the QFs (Jones, Collins, Heath)

This year no Brit girls have made it past the second round...

R2;
Gema Heath lost 6-1 6-3
Sasha Hill lost 6-0 6-4
Nell Miller lost 6-4 6-3

Incidentally, as a sort of by the way re our top 10 ranked, Sonay Kartal has aso entered the GB top 10 after her G2 SF last week. Sonay and Marni are in the latest top 10 in place of Ali and Holly.

Before this event, (as a sort of warm-up), the US play the UK for the Maureen Connolly Cup.

Zoo tennis reports the results as follows:

"Today's results, before the players head to Roehampton for the Grade 1 beginning Sunday:

Whitney Osuigwe USA def. Victoria Allen GBR 7-6(5), 4-6, 6-1
Coco Gauff USA def. Destinee Martins GBR 6-1, 6-1
Alexa Noel USA def. Francesca Jones GBR 6-0, 6-3
Caty McNally USA def. Nell Miller GBR 6-3, 6-3
McNally and Osuigwe USA def. Allen and Martins GBR 6-1, 6-3
Noel and Katie Volynets USA def. Holly Fischer and Miller GBR w/o"

The previous day's results were:

"Cori Gauff d. Victoria Allen 6-2, 6-1

Whitney Osuigwe d. Destinee Martins 7-5, 5-7, 6-4

Caty McNally d. Holly Fischer 6-3, 6-3

Alexa Noel d. Nell Miller 6-1, 6-2

Noel & Volynets d. Allen & Martins 7-6, 6-4

Gauff & McNally d. Fischer & Miller 6-1, 6-1"

In other words, we got thumped !

No Emma quite rightly resting and that must be the strongest USA team for decades, two potential world superstars there. I feel they would have put a rest of the world junior select team to the sword.

Both Destinee and Victoria took Witney to three sets, not bad efforts there.

Yes. Though Witney seemed strangely out of sorts on Sunday - she won but it was a struggle, more so than the score suggests, and she was causing her dad a bit a grief, not wanting to warm up etc. etc. etc. Some 'teenager' stuff going on?

Whereas very young Miss Gauff (who maybe is SO young she hasn't hit her teenage moments yet) was imperious and beat Destinee and Victoria extremely easily.

The US were very pleased with Alexa's 0 & 3 result over Fran.

I think we were just being hospitable.....
