Yeah, Sock (18) out in five to Matteo Berrettini.

He is now 5-13 in 2018 (in singles). Also, started having a go at the umpire (which apparently has been quite common in his matches recently).

We should be very proud of all the wildcards this year, men and women.

Yep definitely need more jeopardy. How about reducing to 16 seeds from the start?

Seemingly, Benoit Paire wouldn't have played if Andy had not withdrawn.

He tore his meniscus slightly on Saturday and was advised not to play. But when he heard Andy had withdrawn he thought it worth the risk.

And he won. Guess he owes one to Andy.....

I haven't done the maths, but the BBC has a slightly different story:

"In total 21 seeds - 11 men and 10 women - have been knocked out in the opening round" That means that there are 64 - 21 = 43 left.

... or is this another ambiguity of English - 21 "have left" as opposed to 21 "are left"?

Hi Christ!  Sorry, when I said 21 left I meant left in and  men only , so as per beeb,  11 have gone. So we are saying same thing!

And they're right - 21 in total are out men and women, one third of the total seeds. Carnage at this early stage!

At the net, he didn't really shake Berretini's hand and said 'your coach is a piece of sh*t, by the way'. Ooo err!

Strangely Sock has never come across to me as that kind of character. I know that Fitzy knows (knew) him well from his time working in the States with Sloane Stephens and Fitzy never said a bad word about him. He and Sock used to hit together.

Perhaps Fitzy was being polite and/or discreet. Or perhaps there is something more going on in Sock's life that none of us are aware of and that is affecting his results and mentality at the moment. His behaviour was out of order but I won't judge him on just this one incident.

Completely agree with that Bob. Also, if Berretini's coach was being a tool, although this was the wrong way to go about it, he may have a point.

I have always found him a very likeable chap but he's having a tough time at the moment. His doubles play is always a pleasure to watch.

He also behaved poorly at the French open though, telling the umpire that she was atrocious and that she was only there because of him, which does suggest a certain arrogance. Im not sure whether the possibility that he is under pressure gives him a completely free pass. Maybe he needs a bit of a break from the game to sort out the mental side.

Aha. I had a sneaking suspicion that I may have misunderstood, I was just mistaken as the the nature of my misunderstanding!
