Yes, but if Heather and Tatjana were out of the FO and hadn't needed to withdraw then Katy would have needed the WC, so it isn't as though another Brit has been denied an opportunity.

Good point, but actually Fanni Stollar who was next below Katy also made the main draw, so Naomi's absence also counted.

Pity about the Heather vs Gabi first up. Would like Gabi to have had better first round odds - really hoping to see her perform this grass court season, but that's not the most auspicious match-up to start!

But we don't know when Naomi withdrew, same with Blinkova - it could have been much earlier in the week, so we have to assume that we've basically just replaced:

Watson, Maria, WC) Katy

with

WC) Watson, Katy, Stollar

I don't think a Brit has been denied here and it looks like it's basically a like for like swap Stollar for Maria and the WC would have gone to Katy. Harsh on Maria being Hev's partner for a while and winning a title, but Stollar seems an engaging and promising young player, destined for a reasonably high profile career so the crowd might enjoy watching her, and I suppose rankings-wise at least, it might free up the path for a Brit.

Disappointed for Em. Was very winnable.

 

And to add insult to injury, she didn't make the doubles draw.
