Very good to see these last couple of tournaments for Anna.

Some reports here of a demise always did look at the very least rather exaggerated. It can be very difficult to judge an individual player's general form on results when part of a newish pair that may just not be gelling for whatever reasons plus the other player may have their form issues. Maybe near impossible without at least some viewing.

A couple of different partners and it has appeared to go much better.

6-2 *5-1 although facing a couple of BPs.

Very good
Always extra especially pleased when Anna does anything at all, so often is she completely dismissed and written off.
The temptation to make some sort of Xena, Warrior Princess team name is now almost overwhelming.

The SF opponents progressed by virtue of a w/o in the QF against the #1 seeds

QF: Anna SMITH/Xenia KNOLL (GBR/SUI) [3] 123 defeated Nicola GEUER/Patrica HON (GER/AUS) 196 6-2 6-2
SF: Anna SMITH/Xenia KNOLL (GBR/SUI) [3] 123 v. María IRÍGOYEN/Ellen PEREZ (ARG/AUS) 207

I'm very happy to see Anna making a good case as to why her potential role in the doubles last week should maybe not have been written off so quickly. And she and Xenia have a good route to the final now after the top seeds withdrew against their next opponents... Hope they can read the map right.

(Edit: Yes, and pretty much echoing blob I know, as I posted before I'd seen his...)

Yes I totally agree with you both.  I was surprised by some commenting it was a shame Joss was available last weekend, as I can't see why she would have been selected in preference to Jo and Hev if Anna wasn't.  I always felt Joss and Anna were evenly matched despite having different strengths.

Clearly those commenting about Joss didn't realise she has retired from playing.

I think they did know - they were just saying if she hadn't retired she would have been their pick to play.   But I think Anne had made up her mind to stick with Jo and Hev so it would made no difference.

I thought Anne's column in the BBC was telling. She stated that after (losing) her singles, Heather 'was able to show me she was really up for it and that gave me confidence she could produce something special with Jo, who was ready to go'.

But then Anne acknowledges that the turn around between singles and doubles was only 30 mins... and in the last set of the doubles, Heather was struggling physically.... 'Again the girls kept battling and the third set was anyone's. Physically, Heather was struggling and the turnaround was tight - 30 minutes between the singles and doubles - but we've been in that position before, she knew what to expect, I knew what to expect.'

And even at this point, she is still not acknowledging that her decision making really didn't make sense. In those circumstances at that point, a fresh Anna had to be a better partner for Jo...

www.bbc.co.uk/sport/tennis/43856820

But since this is now water under the bridge until at least next Feb, I'm very happy for Anna to show that she is still able to bring quality to the court as a specialist doubles player... and I'd really love to see her establish a successful partnership again. Hope indeed she can make the final here.

Yes, it was sad to read of her feet problem that effectively led to her early retirement.
