Juniors playing professional senior tennis

13/06 - Great to see a couple of our juniors get a try-out at high level adults.

The stand-out performance was 16 year-old Eva Shaw (born 2005) who was toe-to-toe in the first set, and staged a bit of a comeback in the second, proving resilient and difficult to beat, hitting winners, playing quite cleverly and not being over-awed at all.

She lost 7-5 6-4, against Storm Sanders, but it was a pleasure to watch her match and she should be very pleased with what she put out there.

Kylie Bilchev (born 2003) posted a passable score, losing 3-6 1-6, and 16 year-old Ranah (born 2005) also got on the scoreboard, with a similar score. (Didn't see either of those matches)

Overall, this seems a pretty decent showing, given ages, and rankings:

Nottingham 100k QR1:

Storm Sanders (AUS) WR161 [3] def Eva Shaw (GBR) 16yo-JR130 [WC] 7-5 6-4

Mayo Hibi (JPN) WR178 [12] def Kylie Bilchev (GBR) 18yo-JR160 6-3 6-1

Elena Gabriela Ruse (ROU) WR175 [9] def Ranah Akua Stoiber (GBR) 16yo-JR449 [WC] 6-2 6-1

For other 'true' juniors, Lui Maxted (born 2003) also played, and lost, but got a few games. (Didn't see it)

For our 'quasi' juniors (i.e. 2002s), the stand-out performance was little fave Felix Gill who played a great match at the Nottingham Challenger, served for the first set, had set points, maybe (possibly) got a little cheated on one of them, and stuck to the job really well in the second set too.

Young Franco-Anglo Arthur also played a very decent match and it's great to see how he's come on since I started following him and how college tennis is helping him - his score for the first set was equally close but, in fact, he was always just slightly behind, whereas Felix actually deserved the first one. But, again Arthur played good tennis, hit winners, looked comfortable, likes coming forward, has a very good 'tennis head', just as was obvious as a kid.

QR1: (q1) Kacper Zuk (POL) WR 173 defeated (qWC) Lui Maxted UNR by 2 & 1

QR1: (q5) Ernesto Escobedo (USA) WR 188 defeated (qWC) Arthur Féry WR 1107 by 7-6(5) 6-2

QR1: (q7) Alex Bolt (AUS) WR 196 defeated (qWC) Felix Gill WR 1106 by 7-6(9) 6-4

19th June:

Lui produced an excellent effort against a top-100 player at Eastbourne.

It wasn't to be but he should be very encouraged by that:

QR1: (q2) Norbert Gombos (SVK) WR 89 defeated (qWC) Lui Maxted UNR (born 2003) 6-4 7-6(4)

Wimbly Qualis - 2021

Thanks to wildcards (two discretionary, two earned through winning the National U18s), four of our youngsters were in action this week in Wimbly qualis.

The outstanding performance was from Jack Pinnington Jones (2003) with a win in QR1 and a decent showing QR2.

Will Jansen (2004) also pushed Anton far closer than anyone imagined, taking him to 6-4 in the third.

Eva Shaw (2005) hit miles more winners than her opponent (and also miles more UEs) and obviously got her percentages slightly wrong but was in the match and that's all part of the learning game.

Matilda (2004) had a terribly hard draw (against Konjuh) and - not surprisingly - lost easily.

QR1:

(qWC) Anton Matusevich WR 544 defeated (qWC) William Jansen UNR by 4-6 6-0 6-4
(qWC) Jack Pinnington Jones WR 1194 defeated João Menezes (BRA) WR 211 by 4 & 3
KONJUH, Ana CRO WR129 [q23] def. (qWC) MUTAVDZIC, Matilda GBR WR853/JR20 6-1 6-2
GORGODZE, Ekaterine GEO WR209 def. (qWC) SHAW, Eva GBR UNR/JR131 6-2 6-2

QR2:

(q7) Arthur Rinderknech (FRA) WR 109 defeated (qWC) Jack Pinnington Jones WR 1194 by 3 & 2

(NB Our 2002-ers, just one year out of juniors, also did/are doing extremely well. With wins for Felix Gill and Arthur Féry in QR1. Over players miles better ranked. And then a win by Arthur in QR2 ! Against Ebden. And counting.....)

Just to note the entry of Yujiro (age 17) in the ATP doubles rankings

2144 - NEW IN - Yujiro Onuma (age 17)

We only have three junior boys with adult doubles rankings :(

But at least three is better than two :)

(Only one junior boy with a singles ranking, Jack PJ, currently 920)

Jasmine should enter the ranking between 1310 and 1340.

Matilda's win should tahe her to about 770.

Jasmine (2004) put up a super human effort today, 3.5 hours, before falling just short:

R2: CONWAY, Jasmine (GBR) Q UNR/1374 lost to GAVRILA, Oana (ROU) 3 722/22 7-6(5) 5-7 4-6

HOWEVER, Matilda put up a super human effort plus, coming back form a set and 0-3 down:

S. Africa 25K: R2: MUTAVDZIC, Matilda (GBR) (Q) 825 def SIMMONDS, Chanel (RSA) 433 (CH=158 2013) (4)6-7 6-3 6-1

ADDED the next day: Matilda lost today, in her QF. But it was a very good week for her. Well done.
