Mathys is about the same age as Jake (a few months younger) and made waves by springing a big surprise and winning the national championships for the 15/16 category last year. This is a big deal (absolutely all the best youngsters play the nationals up to age 16 - most do in the 17/18 category too but not all).
Strangely (for a French kid) he seems to be focusing purely on juniors this year (hasn't played any adult matches at all).
Valentin Royer is also the same age and is better ranked than Mathys (Royer = -4/6 as against Erhard who is -2/6). I read that he is now based in Serbia because his parents work there. He lost in the semis of the nationals last year to Erhard.
What a great start to 2018 for Jacob, his results over the last couple of years have shown pretty steady progress and a win here should give him plenty of confidence to take into top level junior tournaments during the summer.
Agreed the 2001 boys cohort is beginning to look pretty robust with the depth we saw in the 1994 and 1995 groups at junior level. Hopefully they will make a bit of noise in juniors this summer and also get some ATP points in the bag.
What a super result. And super week. And in style.
As David says, particularly as he's never played at this level.
And, as per Oakie, so good to see the 2001 group deepen, with Jacob doing great, and Harry W chalking up wins, as well as Connor, Blu, Felix and various others making their presence felt too.
