That's good to know, The O.
I'd presumed she'd been playing tournaments of one shape or another.
And a top-1000 win is very nice

Indeed and her R1 win was against Gracheva, senior WR 569, I am guessing her CH win if counting wins in junior tournaments.

Good point.
And, yes, I can count all wins in competitive matches (although I'm not sure if Helen Parish does, or whoever decides official career best wins).

Another win! 7-5, 7-6(3).

Next up - Leylah Annie Fernandez (CAN) JWR 162 (CH 88). Only 15yrs old but already Pro ranked 734.

Good stuff

Fernandez beat another 15 yo, the #2 seed Alexa Noel JWR 18 (JCH 14, no senior ranking) rather tidily 6-1 6-4. A pretty precocious quarter of the draw then.

Holly and Fernandez had reached the L16 of the doubles together but have given a walkover to the top seeds ( Alexa Noel+ ). Maybe diplomatic reasons.

It strikes me that playing some adult tennis in money tournaments was exactly the right thing to do in anticipation of stepping up to Grade 1 and above regularly.

Leylah although 6 months older has gone a similar route but with knobs on. She has lost a lot (in stark contrast to Emma) but...... already played 14 futures events including a couple of 60ks she is winning through qualifying more often and following a 60k wc
Reached the QF.

Obviously there is a complex equation between personal development in or out of school, education v professional sport and a balance has to be struck that ideally doesnt compromise any of the childs potential but the different approaches are interesting.

The Holly Fischer machine keeps rolling - She's only gone and taken out the Leylah, ranked 734 in WTA adults

QF: Holly FISCHER (GBR) (age 14) def. Leylah Annie FERNANDEZ (CAN) (age 15) WTA 734 1-6 7-5 6-2

This is an incredible come back tournament. Long may it continue.

Was her long lay-off due to injury or due to school/training?

The O pointed out that the lay-off wasn't quite as long as all that as she'd been playing UTR/money tournaments in the USA. But I'm hoping that school was a big part.....

Holly lost to Ana, the younger sister of Junior Wimbly runner-up, and Junior US Open runner-up, Axel Geller.

SF: Ana Geller (ARG) beat Holly Fisher 6-1 6-0

Surprising scoreline but there remain some very impressive wins from the week. Holly will have to be content with a junior rankings rise of about 200 places to the low 200s.

Holly has almost a whole year on Ana, great weeks work for a 14 year old in a grade 1 tournament

Great first tournament back. Things get tougher next 2 weeks. Hopefully she picks up some more good wins and points.

Chasing Emma all the way to the top 10.

One would hope both Emma and Holly are top 10 prospects by the end of year 11 they are both School
Year 10 at present and even now on top 100 form indeed Emma now 67 ie 12th of the 18 2002s in the top 100.

Although not top 100 yet Hollys form is compatible with the 3 2003s Ranked 61,62 and 81 respectively of course there is also the Oswigwesk Con Gauff (2004 and still 13) already bearing down on the top 10 and ranked 30.
