The first of the Winter Cups started today - qualifying for the under 12 event. The boys team of Jamie Diack, Viktor Frydrych and Henry Trump had a comfortable 3-0 win over Croatia, not losing a set, and take on Hungary for qualification to the finals. The girls team of Sophya Devas, Vlada Kozak (who recently won a U12 event in France as CD reported elsewhere) and Hannah Read had a bye, but now faces a potentially tough match against Ukraine for qualification - Ukraine are usually one of the strongest nations in this event.
Sophya eked out a victory in a tight contest (winning 7-6(10) in the third) to give the girls the advantage, which Vlada built on with a more comfortable win. Although the doubles was lost a 2-1 win sees GBR through to the finals, and the team play Poland for seeding rights.
Highly impressive demolition job by the boys on Hungary (just 5 games dropped in a 3-0 drubbing), so they will also qualify for the finals in 2 weeks time. Tomorrow they take on Italy for seeding rights.
In the under 12 girls event neither Sophya or Vlada were able to win in singles so the team lost 2-1 and will have to face one of the other winners (Russia, Romania or Czech Republic) in the finals . No result yet from the boys. Qualification for the under 14 and under 16 events takes place next weekend.
Under 14 and Under 16 qualifying starts tomorrow. The under 14 girls (Matilda Mutavdzic, Andrea Pineda and Eva Shaw) are top seeded, playing Georgia tomorrow. The under 16 girls (Amelia Bissett, Lillian Mould and Lily Hutchings) will be unseeded and up against it in their group.
We won the boys under 16 last year but will probably not be seeded to qualify here. The team is Jack Pinnington Jones, Joel Pierleoni and Felix Gill. The under 14 team (Patrick Brady, Samuel Reeve and Yujiro Onuma ) are seeded 3, facing Ireland tomorrow
Both boys teams got off to winning starts today. The under 14s beat Ireland 2-1, and will need to beat Germany tomorrow to progress to the finals. The under 16s won against Norway, but the draw hasn't been kind to them. The second seeds Italy appear much stronger than the top seeds Ukraine (who lost), with seedings based on TE rankings, and it is Italy they will have to beat to reach the finals. The Italians are headed by the second highest ranked 2002 boy, Lorenzo Musetti, who is in the ITF top 50

Doubles to play
The under 14 girls had an easy win against Georgia, but are likely to have much stronger opposition tomorrow against Belgium, who won impressively against Ukraine. The under 16s have just begun their match against 4th seeds Spain

Two of our 4 teams have qualified for their finals, which is a pretty good result considering the strengths of the teams relative to opponents. The under 14 girls were always our strongest bet, and though they had a tougher match today as expected came through to face Sweden with final seeding at stake. The under 14 boys rallied from the loss of the second singles to claim their place via a doubles final set tiebreak - they face Belgium in the seeding match. The under 16 boys were as expected outclassed

The U14 girls smoothly gained seeding rights, but the boys were beaten today. The under 16 boys lead Denmark (like us with two top 2003 boys, a year younger than many here) 1-0 in the match for third place. The under 16 girls lost 2-1 to Belgium but beat Ireland 3-0 today.

I saw that photo of the boys and smiled - it's only really at that age that you get kids of the same age with one almost a head and a half taller than the other. It's so good we're not all the same
Interesting that Katie O'B was captain. I thought she was working full time in the insurance industry (although still playing a lot of club tennis). I did see her up at the NTC fairly recently daytime during the week and wondered what she was doing there. Now I know!!
