George Loffhagen

As Priesty pointed out, George went seriously AWOL - no idea why we didn't see him for a couple of years

But he's back

Late 2022, he reappeared. He played just the UK 25k events, with a few wins, here and there. But made the semis in Glasgow, only losing it by a whisker, which was the highlight. (And then added brief trip to Spain for a 15k)

This year, he's again been mainly GB based. He made the final in Loughborough. And the semis in Bath. As well as some R1 losses. Got his ranking up to about 700.

And then took off to India. Where he lost to the second seed, in R1, in three sets, in the first event

AND THEN, in the second event:

L32: George Loffhagen (GBR) WR 702 def. (1) Ly Nam Hoang (VIE) WR 245 6-3 6-4

A win over a top-250 player is mega. Let's hope George is now truly back to stay.

Always been hoping for more from George. That's a tremendous scalp.

Just looked at his activity and he was inactive for just under a year. Possibly injury but wasn't he someone who struggled with the travelling so maybe some mental health issues that have improved with a year out and another years maturity.

And George is re-born

With the last post being the end of March, and having been absent for a long time, he has relaunched himself into pro tennis with a zeal, and a success that's been a joy to watch.

He won the M25 title in Notts, the M25 title in India, was runner-up at the M25 in Turkey

And, recently, on grass, he's beaten Virtanen (ATP 131) and Shang (ATP 176).

And - the cherry on the cake - the lad has now been given a wildcard into the Main Draw of Wimbledon

According to an article in today's Telegraph George decided to quit tennis in 2021, returned to his studies and worked in a pub but then decided to return to the tour last August. But he says it's done him good, he's enjoying his tennis more and is able to put things in perspective better. Certainly seems to have done something for him.

We can forget sometimes that players are just people off court and when you are 18, 19, 20 etc you can very often still be unsure about where you are going in life.
Good for George if having that time away made him see that tennis is the one thing he really wants to have a go at.
He certainly seems sharper and in a better place now.
All these players must feel under tremendous pressure at times whatever their ranking.

Thought George was injured and out for a while in his late teens? I always wondered why he didnt take the college route? Anyway good to see him back!

Congrats to George, who won the ITF 25k today at Roehampton

He beat Luke Simkiss (who also had a great week) 6-2 6-2

He's been on fire recently.

As I just posted in the Roehampton thread :

"George's 3rd M25 title of the year, following an Indian and Nottingham titles in April and May, will take him to a further new CH, provisionally about 340, and GB #8."
