It seems to me that whenever there's a low grade event in France, quite a lot of our players take part, are often seeded - and they usually end up getting completely taken apart.
Unfortunately, this week's event only confirmed my theory:
Open Sainte Gregoire, France - hard (indoor) - Grade 5
Are many of the French youngsters maybe underranked in juniors? - say not going much outside France chasing ranking points but still playing other tournaments and then thumping many who come visit?
Yes, absolutely. Most French players don't play ITF juniors (and their parents won't drive them to them) as there are so many high level domestic junior competitions and also they all play the adult money tournaments, from age 13 or so upwards, all close by, so why bother? When you go up the grade level a bit, then the profile of the player changes slightly so it's a bit different, but at G4 or 5, you'll get a host of lowly or unranked kids at anything up to about JWR 400 level.
The qualifier who beat Indy Spink with no problem (although several years older) has only played three junior events in her life but played about 65 high level matches in the last 12 months, including beating Lucie Wargnier, the girl who beat Beth Grey a few weeks back, before losing to Maia.
