Boys & Girls: Nike Junior international Liverpool, Grade 5 (Week 47)

Age is not necessarily a defining point. There are older players trying to get up the ladder and trying to impress for a scholarship.

If there were more GB tournaments for G4 and G3 then some of the players wouldn't play. Millie is probably too good for this level now. Hannah Mc and Morgan Cross are only playing as it is local. Erin is probably too good for a G5.

Can't agree fully with this.

Irrespective of player level, if valuable points can be achieved then surely the event is viable.
Millie has a potential +20 points
Erin has a potential +30 points
Morgan has a potential +20 points
Hannah has a potential +30 points

Obviously doubles point should also be considered.

I agree that if there were more higher level GB tournaments then the G5 may be less well entered but that would only be if points had been accrued in the other events.
For all players entered a G5 win would be beneficial so the event remains viable.

When you consider the cost to play overseas then on a £/point potential basis then any UK ITF event is likely the winner.

The other consideration is player development.
If a player can compete in a "less expensive" event that offers no ranking points benefit but offers the opportunity for a great technical/tactical learning process then they should be straight in.
After all, at this stage of their tennis careers it's all about developing the skills for the future.
This is their apprenticeship and any one who's been through one of those will vouch for it being hard work, uncomfortable and at times seeming utterly meaningless. However, eventually the successful apprentice becomes the master.
Bearing that in mind the one who learns the least may well be the winner ..... all the rest are winners but in a different way.

Fair points Hilda
GB tournaments are a cheaper option, but as there are so few of them, people choose to play them when they can.
G5's were intended as a start up platform onto the ITF junior ladder, but it doesn't always work out the way it was planned.

Maybe BT tour is the other option to go down for match practice and value for money as there is prize money available.

From the ITF website wins for Alex, Mario, Liu and Daniel, who beat Barney..
Just a couple of girls results and a win for Millie and Bella(good win - turns 15 this week)

The final two results in the girls are in and wins for Erin and Tanysha

Barney withdrew from the doubles, so I wonder if there was an injury early on in the singles.

Agree with the British Tour for good match practice. They don't work as a "value for money" option though if you're trying to offset your costs with prize money.

Have you ever tried to prise the winnings away from a teenager?
It got suggested once but, in future, I'll take the easy option and just enjoy the tennis while they're spending their inheritance smile

Well done on the girls, for getting rid of the last two peskies.

We're now down to one 2003 born player, one born very late 2002, and two 2001-ers (although one early Jan 2001).

Apart from Erin, the girls through to semis in the doubles are all different players from the singles, so that's nice too (with 7 out of 8 being British).

Very pleased for Kai, needless to say. And big congrats to qualifier, Dan Martin (and, indeed, Alex Maggs who's only clocked up one half-decent singles result this year until now).

Dahul and Mackinlay are into the doubles final, with Clegg and Maggs yet to play their SF.

Tanysha and Millie went to the wire, with Millie winning the SF, 7-6(4) in the third set.

Sonay Kartal and Tiana Fox are through to the doubles final.

Alex Maggs lost in three to the Spanish qualifier.

I assume that is some can get back for county cup rather than a late finish tomorrow.
