Boys & Girls: Nike Junior international Liverpool, Grade 5 (Week 47)

The last of the GB junior tournaments is upon us and it is back on the Wirral again.

This tournament has brought to prominence some high profile juniors who have won this event - Jodie Burrage, Emma Raducanu, Aidan McHugh etc

TE has just finished this week and was dominated by foreigners, but the best Brits normally get a wildcard for this week. Will Nolan has a QWC for the boys after reaching the semi final. Eva Shaw lost in the final, but I don't think she is old enough to play ITF yet.

QF starts today and main draw Monday.

Millie Bissett or Hannah McColgan will be favourite in the girls. The boys is wide open with Connor Thomson an in form entrant.

My impression is that Eva has to turn 13 before the tournament starts when Emma Radacanu won it she was very close to that deadline.

Drawsheets are up at www.itftennis.com/juniors/tournaments/tournament/info.aspx In the boys Connor is seeded 3 behind a couple of Spaniards. Erin Richardson has a wildcard in the girls' event, and is seeded 2 behind Millie

Women's draw is very strong with the likes of Tanysha D, Lillian Mould, Morgan Cross in addition to Millie, Erin and Hannah

Any recommendations on the men's side - I've not seen too many of them other than Julian Lewis and Toby Samuel.

I'm down tomorrow and some of Tuesday.

Quite a few of the boys seeds lost today, including the two top seeds from Spain losing to George Hutchings and a double bagel for Daniel Martin (who goes on to face Harry Lazell, one of our under 14 team). Most of the girls results are yet to come in, but Tiana Fox took out the sixth seed.

Great result by Bella Moen to take out Holly Staff.

I'm very interested to see if Sonay is injury-free, and how she does.

As you say, David, well done to George H and Dna Martin.

Lovely to see little Lui Maxted (born Dec. 2003) getting a win too.

I could only stay until 5pm and some of the girls matches weren't even on court.
I'll try and give a few thoughts later.

Don't read too much into seedings at this level.
On the boys side - not seen too many before. Bradley Buckland looked very sharp as did Connor Thomson, who has a lovely backhand and is very good at the net.
Toby Samuel - not much change from last year, keeps the ball in court and waits for the errors. Lacks the power for this level.
Rahul Dhokia has a very nice game. Seems to have a lot of time before playing shots.
Matthew Rutter has a nice game, very small and very busy defensively.
George won a real tussle - George is very good defensively and quite opinionated
Barney Fitzpatrick - looked the best player today. Very impressed.
Ying Hou was awful, how was he seeded?
Harry Lazell - very impressed.

On the girls side, Erin was solid and won easily. Scarlett Hutchinson is just 16, 6ft 3 and has been out for quite a long time. Huge serve and could hit winners on both hands, but was very inconsistent and will be a very dangerous player with match fitness.
Alex Topalovic won a scrappy match against Alicia Dudenay.
The Norwegian girl Haseth was the best female I saw play - Ellie Aldrich looks a very good player, but couldn't get anywhere near the Norwegian. Ellie is one to keep an eye on.
Didn't see too much of Hannah's match, but it looked a very high standard.
Tianna played very nicely once she got going. Eloise Soraty did well to come back against the Irish girl, whose levels dropped in the second and third sets.
Lillian let slip a 5-2 lead in the first set, when I had to leave, but looks like she won comfortably.
Morgan Cross played a real tight match and could easily have lost. The other girl had a match point and served for the match. Morgan has a cracking off forehand, but her game was a bit inconsistent.
Didn't see much of the others. Two foreigners(one boy/one girl) got replaced in the draw after arriving late.
Nice to see Dan Smethurst and Jack Carpenter as coach/mentors. Nick Weal and plenty of other coaches were present.

Will be down tomorrow, but I cannot stay all day.

Barney Fitzpatrick is the big favourite in my eyes for the boys title, with Buckland and Thomson both losing.

Well done to young Toby, although the style of play you describe, paulisi, is not really the most exciting going forward. However if Bradley looked very sharp and he took him out, credit to him.

I'm pleased to hear Kai's result, especially if Connor was looking so good yesterday, as per your report. He doesn't play many events and I reckon he's underranked.

The two brothers are very talented. The younger one was unlucky to lose. Their coach needs to remember how to behave though.

I know who you mean!!

To be fair I think he coaches the boys free of charge and they both have an unbelievable work ethic.

My son was once 6-0 up in a tiebreak against Lui (Orange ball) and lost 8-6. He didnt speak to anyone for about an hour afterwards!!  Looks like quite a good score now!!

Free of charge? Well, hats off to him, even if he's a bit out of control.

I've been following the Maxteds for a while - it's always interesting to see those who follow a slightly different path.

I thought Sonay would beat Lilly too - as above, if she is properly 'uninjured', she's another one who should be on the radar but isn't.

Sonay only just beat Lilly, but there wasn't much in it. Sonay is back fully fit playing three times a week, I believe, and battering her hitting partners in training. Still very small for her age, but seems very solid.
Nice to see a few new names - Bella Moen won 11 games on the bounce against Eloise and had to let school know she would be missing another day... Erin won comfortably. Morgan injured her hip in a close match with Tanysha. Millie had a simple win over an erratic Italian.
Quite impressed with Elisha, who could have won in straight sets, but faded. Ellie Beazley played nicely against the very good Norwegian. Annali won easily against an out of sorts Tianna.

The girls winner is open - I would expect the winner of Erin v Haseth to play Millie in the final.

Just to note that the aim of a home G5 seems to be holding true - giving the younger juniors a chance to shine.

In the girls last 8, amongst out players, there are:

1 x 2003
2 x 2002
3 x 2001

(No 2000s, or 1999s).

The two foreign girls left in are 2001 and 2002. Great to see Millie confirming her success up in Finland.

In the boys, it's slightly less successful that way but boys are in general a year or so behind the girls in terms of transitioning so it makes sense.

We have:

2 x 2002
2 x 2001
3 x 2000

and one 2002 foreign player.

Congrats to the 2002 - Toby S and Barney F - in particular (and the Spanish lad).
