Week 43 - ITF ($25K) - Obidos, Portugal, Carpet

A great win for Katie S even if there was a hint of Galfi being injured later on - the third set was still very tight and Galfi did claim one break back during it.

QF: (4) Katie BOULTER (GBR) 222 beat Anastasia PIVOVAROVA (RUS) 532 (CH:93 May 11) 6-1 6-2
QF: (6) Katie SWAN (GBR) 345 beat (2) Dalma GALFI (HUN) 167 (CH:136 June 17; JCH:1 Sept 15) 1-6 6-0 6-4

SF: (4) Katie BOULTER (GBR) 222 vs (1) Viktoria KUZMOVA (RUS) 132 (CH:130 Oct 17) 19yrs JCH:24 Jan 16
SF: (6) Katie SWAN (GBR) 345 vs (3) Anna KALINSKAYA (RUS) 168 (CH:127 June 17) 18yrs JCH:3 Feb 16

These are both tough matches, Katie S's opponent not much different from her last match in terms of pedigree, whilst Katie B will have a significantly tougher match than she has had so far.

Yes, as blob notes, missed that both matches are repeats of the QF matches of last week, when Katie B won 6-7(8) 6-2 6-2 and Katie S lost 6-4 2-6 4-6. So both were very tight affairs then.... good luck to the Katies in the rematches.

Well done to the Katies

Katie B continues easily her career year to date and Katie S her recent good form.

I had a good feeling that Katie S's match against Galfi would at least be close. That's two weeks in a row that she has had very good matches with very high CH juniors like herself, both now in their first year out of junior eligibility and top 200 seniors. Katie does appear to be rolling on again. She had quite a few changes to deal with and a period of injury issues. I think that she may be quite a confidence player and winning and staying apparently so injury free looks to have helped her continue to build. Let's turn the tables on Kalinskaya this week and Katie B you just repeat and let's be having Katie vs Katie !

Already very probably a new CH for Katie B on Monday week ( taking out her CH 211 and at least getting close to WR 200 ) and possibly a new CH for Katie S ( current CH 338 ).

Yes, but not so promising now. 6-4 0-4* in second set, and there has been a short MTO before the last game... I hope Katie B is ok. She has only won 1/8 points on serve so far in the second set.

Second set went 6-0, but back in a tight third set 3-3.

And then in a blink of an eye it was 6-3. Another fine win.

Brilliant !

And now we can ask: 'What Katy did'?

Before moving on to 'What Katy(ie) did next'.

Good luck to both.

That is Katie B's fourth final of the year, her third at $25K or above.
Other than those that played regularly on the WTA (Baltacha, Keothavong, Broady, Watson, Robson, Konta) this is in prime contention amongst the best seasons one of our 'up and comers' has had for a decade.
Time to cap it with a second title of the year.

It means that Katie has:
Played more pro matches than any other GB player - 61. Johanna & Naomi are next on 58.
The second highest number of wins - 39. Johanna has 40.
The fourth highest win %, 39-22, 63.93%. The three ahead of her are:
1: Sabrina Federici 5-4, 80.00%
2: Johanna Konta 40-18, 69.49%
3: Emily Arbuthnott 15-7, 68.18%
Is tied for the most wins against higher ranked opponents, with 11; a figure shared by Jodie & Heather. Katie's was achieved in 24 matches, Jodie 25, and Hev 26.
Has come back from a set down to win more often than any other GB player - 6 times, two clear of any one else. For players involved in 10 or more such matches, her % rate for comebacks is fourth, 0.5% behind Johanna & Gabi, the clear leader is Emily Arb.

It also gives the GB women 750 pro wins for the season.

Congratulations to Katie B - that is very likely to be enough to get her into the top 200
