RE: Week 43 - ITF ($15K) - Wirral, UK Hard

Given the Italians were out in force in the Wirral (there were four Italians in the main draw), we've done a pretty good job of saying arrivederci to them

There's none left in the doubles, and only one in the main draw.

It's difficult to be too confident about Freya, given it's her first tournament back, and paulisi's there and predicts that Remondina will make the final, so that's a better indication.
But Redmondina lost in two easy-ish sets to Olivia Nicholls a couple of weeks ago (such a shame Olivia is injured) and has had very few decent wins recently (and only beaten two inexperienced, although talented, juniors here). So, despite the reservations above, I'm hoping that Freya will now be firing on all cylinders and beat her in two (after taking out Eden, who can play beautifully but often doesn't). Sam is so up and down too (losing to Julie Gervais so easily was against most people's predictions here). I'd love to see it but I don't think she'll win.

Well you've carefully avoided picking an overall winner there CD, unless you expect Freya to go all the way! I think Sam is more likely to win than Freya, though the dark horse could come from Maia vs Beth's match. Beth is playing very well at the moment and took out the #2 seed easily yesterday. She could spring further surprises.. but if Maia gets through against her today, then I would rate her too.

You're right Michael, it wasn't supposed to be an overall prediction, just those parts of it that I'd bet 10p on, if you see what I mean. You can a strongish feeling about certain parts without having one for the overall. So I have Freya to make the final and Sam not to win.
But if you want an overall one, just for the sake of it, I'd have Freya in the final against the winner of Maia/Beth, and the winner of Maia/Beth winning.
And if Sam wins, that'd be just fine too

Silva took the first set 6-2 against Christie.
Murray has just missed set pt at 5-3*
Grey and Lumsden are 5-5

Sam 6-4 - the game at 5-3* was very long - around 26 points.
Maia 7-5 - very close on the scores, but looks like Maia's serve is the deciding factor with better stats so far.

paulisi, just wondered: is Dan Cox there this week with Eden?

Maia Lumsden ran away with the second set 6-1. Freya has rallied.

Maia is the first one through today, with a win of 7-5 6-1 against Beth.

Freya and Eden are one set all, just about to start the third. Both capable of playing superbly, both capable of completely crumbling.....will be interesting.
Sam is heading for a win over the young German, leading 6-4 5-3*

And Sam does it nicely, without even having to serve for it, winning 6-4 6-3

No - Eden has a young lad with her. Brother/Boyfriend?

I'm not down until the final (not there today)

Not surprised Maia won if her serving stats are high. Her big serve is decent, but has been erratic in the past.

Sam has an incentive to do well as it is local and the family have been down to watch. Mum and Nan were down earlier in the week alongside Team Bath coaches and team mates.

Talking of coaches Beechy and Lucie were down this week as well as a couple of coaches from Delgado & Lee academy for Tanysha and Lauren. Even the Edgbaston coach came up to watch Lillian and Maia has her coach with her.

Thanks for that. Great to hear that Sam has a lot of support - still can't get over how badly she was treated last year (was it last year?) and how snarky Bates was when talking about her not getting a wildcard.
Must be a good atmosphere, and fun/useful for the coaches/teams to get in contact too. It's one of the indirect benefits of the tournaments and one of the losses therefore of the LTA trimming them back so much.

Freya a break up in the third.

Couple of other things to note. Beth likely to give doubles a miss at Sunderland next week and then possibly team up with Sam for Shrewsbury and Poland 25ks.
Katherine Barnes hoping to play qualifying at Sunderland. Trying to play up a level to judge where she needs to be, rather than play the same people week in and out.

Sam vs Maia will be a really interesting SF match. I would also think that the winner of this match will win the tournament, and that Maia is favourite. Note that Maia's 4 pts thus far will take her to a career high, if she doesn't have points coming off next week. And yes a win for either would be great to see.

Freya and Eden having a good battle at the moment 3-3 in the third.

And so Eden is serving for the match at 6-5. And with Freya having been 3-0 up too.

The one person who will be pleased, no doubt, is Remondina who's sitting pretty, not having played today, while our two 'who wants to lose more' players are battling it out to the bitter end...

Eden has her doubles later today too....

Bang goes one half of my prediction

Eden wins 7-5 in the third.

Well done to her - nice to see her having a good run - she hasn't had much to get upbeat about in the last few months.

Hope she's not too tired.....

And Ms. Silva duly wrapped up a good win over the returning Freya, 6-2 3-6 7-5
Just that one pesky remains then between a double GB title haul.

Results thus far here and in Portugal take the GB women to 40 wins on the week (and counting), their highest for any single week of the year.
