Week 43 - ITF ($15K) - Wirral, UK Hard

Well done Eden, her second final of the year, after making one in her comeback in week 13.
Best week of the year for Sam, her first singles final since Sharm in May 2016.

Whoever wins, it will be a big deal.
It will be Eden's first pro singles title, and only Samantha's second (the last coming in 2012 at Glasgow $25K).
Best of luck to both.

It will be the GB womens 13th pro singles title of the year.

So all the predictions underestimated poor Eden. Gues she's just unpredictable ! Glad the Italian is out. And well done to Sam. Lovely for her to have a good week in front of friends and family. All GB finals are just SO nice.....

Having faced each other across the net earlier, Maia & Sam combine to claim the doubles crown.
F: Murray/Lumsden (GBR/GBR) defeated Barnett/Sainsbury (GBR/GBR) 6-4 6-4

All of Maia's pro titles have come this year, this is her third, the second in doubles; her second at Wirral, having won the singles here earlier in the year.
For Sam, a 15th pro doubles title, with a tenth different partner. Her third doubles final in a row, and second title in as many events. This makes a dozen titles at $10/15K level.

Well done the winners

Eden looks like her updated 44 points will at least have her very close to her CH 571 on Monday week with the title clearly sealing that deal. Domestically she will move ahead of Freya, Jodie, Emily and Maia ( others in a grouping around that 40 point / WR 600 mark ) to GB #13.

Quite big gaps then to #12 Sam ( current WR 490 but on the rise ) and #11 Mandy ( WR 399 ) and then to #10 Katie S and other top half 300s ( another grouping ).

There are definite steps between groups in the rankings of the GB women

Sam in charge in third set. Eden just been broken back

All in all a very positive week for the girls across all venues, with plenty of CH's when the points get added on - Boulter, Maia, Eden(if she wins today), Beth, Fran, Ella, Ola, Katie S

It's very good. Though I reckon it still looks tight re CHs on Monday week for Katie S, Eden ( even with her win today) and Fran. Of course Katie S and Eden can add more and make sure. Fran will still net have the same points as she has now and in the current rankings is 3 places off her CH

I think it's been a great week in the Wirral! I wrote this about the 4 big talking points this week and would love to know your thoughts - especially about the online trolls Freya faced

Great article. And a great week for Sam !

I saw the twitter feed from Freya, sadly there is far too much of this, often from people who haven't a clue about the players and matches involved. Good on Freya for publicising it, and great to see the level of support for her that followed.

It's a good article Nick. smile On the trolls, I understood such abuse was illegal now.. In Freya's case here it seems to be one individual in particular. I think tennis authorities need to do more, ITF, WTA, LTA (as this is the UK), or whoever. It would be good for them to have a reporting mechanism for such abuse, and then a follow up process with the law. In short, this one abuser should be hit with a hefty fine at least, since all accounts should be traceable, and their account closed. Tennis authorities have to assume some responsibility - after all they made betting on ITF matches possible - and I think there needs to be more pressure on them to do more to address the situation, and at least provide a mechanism for helping players receiving this abuse.

Well done Samantha on her second singles crown
A long and eventful journey since the last one in 2012, offers a heartwarming validation.

13th title of the season for the ladies, first since our double haul in week 36.

Very comfortable win. Sam was too solid for Eden, who was nowhere near her best.
