Week 42 - Challenger ($50,000+H) - Las Vegas NV, USA (hard)

Probably a good result for a neutral GB fan today (neutral between the two of them, I mean) - confirms that Liam is in great form and no doubt quite a fillip for him and Cam could no doubt do with a few days off after 11 wins in a row!

Once again, all the forum members that now have egg on their faces, after I predicted Liam to win this and was mocked.

Congrats on getting so close with your prediction Vandenburg.

However, while I know that making lots of 'out there' predictions is the best way to ensure that you get one of them right from time to time (not that Liam winning today was very 'out there', for reasons you probably took into account when making the prediction in the first place, but still ....), you're beginning to sound like an annoying kid I knew at junior school by going on about stuff like this every day and pretending that you've got one up on other people when you know they don't really care and they weren't really mocking you for predicting a more than plausible (if unlikely) result.

I know that for many people here, it has now overstepped the barrier between slightly funny and very irritating. So, feel free start a 'Vandenburg's wacky predictions' thread in the Chat section if you really want to (that way, anyone who actually does care can keep proper track and everyone else can ignore it), but please calm it down on the rest of the forum, for the sake of your own dignity, if nothing else.

Just hope Cam still does get the points he needs for the Aussie Open MD. He should. And otherwise I am pleased for Liam.

Sorry, I had missed that "egg on their faces" and "mocked" bit.

Seriously Vandy, you need to quit that. You were NOT mocked, you were purely disagreed with re your prediction. You were right, others of us ( hardly all the forum members ) were wrong. And you were congratulated on it. And there it could have been left, a Vandy positive.

Have some ruddy humility when you are right and stop inventing stuff !!  And baiting !!

 It's a fine line, isn't it?

I agree there have been some slightly tedious things that have been pretty much done to death. (Talking generally, not specifically). And I think everyone finds it hard to keep off their favourite hobby-horse.

Putting all the predictions in one thread certainly makes a lot of sense.

But I do think the forum would be dull if it were 100% tennis and lacked all 'character'. A bit of diatribe and rant does add a little spice and stops it being bland. Although it's nice, there's only so much 'Go, Hev,', 'Well done, Hev', 'Shame, Hev' that people want to read. The trouble is that a little 'character' goes a long way and the balance is not easy.

Oh those all GB ties and who to support. Such a dilemma. But I think in the end this was (just) my preferred result. I have no doubt Cam will continue his rapid march up the rankings regardless and this is not a major set back in any way, shape or form. But the points opportunities of going deep here in relation to his AO direct entry ambitions would have been great.

However Liam is still a step or two behind Cam and so I am delighted to see him get maintain his own recent up turn in form. This will can only boost his confidence that much further.

Taking a paragraph at a time ... 1) yes, 2) yes, most of us have been 'guilty' of it to at least some extent from time to time, me very much included, 3) this now seems to have been done, 4) I completely agree, and but there are limits beyond which people can start getting turned off the forum so it comes back to the fine line/balance issue again.

Hopefully anyone who has been around the forum for a long time will realise that we give people a lot more leeway than many other forums do (made easier by the fact that forumites generally are a great group of people and we're lucky that even those who are tempted to troll a bit aren't that bad wink), indeed some might say too much, but I'd rather err on that side than be too heavy-handed.

Congratulations to Liam, I think it's the best outcome GB wise as it gives Cam a break and a boost for Liam. He has a great chance to win this now.

And yes also well played Vandy, right again you are indeed.

Liam plays the giant Opelka next, second match on the same court as yesterday so no Mike Cation for us. Indy and SC have already commented on "going deep" . For me, the real points start at the semi finals in all levels of tournaments. A loss before then and your ranking won't change much. It can be hard to backup a really big victory, I hope Liam can maintain his focus.

Opelka was serving bombs against Jay in round 1, and controlled most of the rallies, on the few occasions that they had a baseline exchange. Liam will need to serve really well, and try and use some of his variety to get the big man on the move

Liam is a better returner than Jay at this moment in time, I think it'll be a very close match (as Opelka's usually are)

For the record:

QF:  (8) Reilly Opelka (USA) WR 175 (CH = 125 in June) vs Liam Broady WR 196

There is no head-to-head.  Just noticed that the Yank's 6'11", 11 inches taller than Liam!

Correct. Just a "head above head", as you correctly pointed out afterwards.
