Eliz off to a good start taking the first set 6-2 Esther lost the first set 2-6 but is doing much better in the second - currently 4*-3 Holly battled back from a break down, but has just been broken again for 3-5
Although there were some encouraging signs for the future Holly faded and the more consistent Japanese player won 6-4 6-1. Esther lost 6-2 5-7 6-1 Eliz is in to a decider at 6-2 2-6
We have our first winner Eliz held on to her serve from 0-30 in the ninth game and then her Mexican opponent crumbled with 4 errors, mainly at the net, allowing Eliz to break to love for the match
(WC) Eliz Maloney d. Maria Jose Portillo Ramirez (MEX) 6-2 2-6 6-4
Emily helped by 12 aces becomes our second winner - from the little I saw she appeared to be bossing the match but making enough errors to keep the Japanese girl in contention.
Thaisa Grana Pedretti (BRA) d. (WC) Anna Loughlan 6-0 6-3
(8) Emily Appleton d. Ayumi Miyamoto (JPN) 6-2 4-6 6-2
Gemma couldn't make much impact on the second seed. Although the French Open champion wasn't very impressive in the Roehampton first round, according to CD, I guess the three matches she played there have helped to accustom her to the surface. In the couple of games I saw she was employing drop shots effectively.
Marta Paigina (RUS) d. (WC) Esther Adeshina 6-2 5-7 6-1
(WC) Eliz Maloney d. Maria Jose Portillo Ramirez (MEX) 6-2 2-6 6-4
Thaisa Grana Pedretti (BRA) d. (WC) Anna Loughlan 6-0 6-3
(12) Mai Hontama (JPN) d. (WC) Holly Fischer 6-4 6-1
(8) Emily Appleton d. Ayumi Miyamoto (JPN) 6-2 4-6 6-2
(2) Whitney Osuigwe (USA) d. (WC) Gemma Heath 6-3 6-1
Monday's matches featuring Brits are also on courts 5 and 6 with Jodie on four, so a good chance that most will be streamed. French Open semifinalist Elena Rybakina (WTA 428 / JWR 5) was the highest seed to fall on Saturday - paying the price for not playing a warm-up tournament on grass (similar to 2016 FO champion Rebeka Masarova, who got thumped by Gabi last year). Two of the last 3 Wimbledon winners - Potapova and Ostapenko - won Roehampton as well. The fourth match on court 6 (in between Anton and Barnaby) is arguably the match of the round between Roehampton finalist Kaja Juvan (WTA 576) and semifinalist/Australian Open champion Marta Kostyuk (WTA 508)
