Girls: 2017 Wimbledon Juniors, grass - Grade A (Week 28)

A very thin British contingent in qualifying, suggesting that Jodie Burrage has got in direct, once Special Exempts were cleared, and Anna Loughlan probably added to the wildcards. Surprisingly there is one bye in the draw. 2 wins are required for qualification

Tzarina Tuen Matthews v (12) Violet Apisah (PNG)

Lily Ghodrati v (16) Malene Helgo (NOR)

Maria Budin v (14) Clara Burel (FRA)

Unsurprisingly Lily and Tzarina found the going tough, which means that in the main draw we will have 4 direct entrants (Emily, Fran, Jodie and Katie) along with probably 7 wildcards

(12) Violet Apisah (PNG) d. Tzarina Tuen Matthews 6-0 6-0
(16) Malene Helgo (NOR) d. Lily Ghodrati 6-0 6-0
(14) Clara Burel (FRA) d. Maria Budin 6-4 6-2

Noticed Katie Swan is in the main girls draw which surprised me, although I don't follow the juniors. Draws on Wimbledon site now.

I'm really surprised Kayla Day is playing here!

You quite often get someone doing well in the Pro game, who hasn't played Juniors all year, decide to have a go to pick up a Grand Slam (second in her case). Annika Beck was also on the brink of the top 100 when she decided to enter (and win) the French Open Juniors.  Kayla will be one of the favourites for the title here, along with Claire Liu, who won Roehampton without dropping a set - her only defeat in 3 Junior events this year being the French Open final (to Whitney Osuigwe).

In general the draw has been fairly kind to the strongest British players, keeping them away from the two Americans and also the dangerous Marta Kostyuk, who could continue the recent tradition of an Eastern European winner (Ostapenko, Zhuk, Potapova being the last 3) - though Gemma has to play the second seed. I will add the first round matches later, unless someone else does so in the meantime.

I guess if she wins the tournament it might help with sponsorship or WTA wildcards. Can't really see any point to it for developmental reasons

She may just want to have some fun be involved at Wimbledon for a bit longer, she was down watching the juniors at Roehampton on Sunday

Good looking group of 11 British girls there of differing ages, our fairly clear top 10 in the current junior rankings plus Katie Swan.

Courts 5 and 6 both appear on the BBC's streaming schedule today - so all the matches involving Brits except Esther's should be viewable. Esther has the third highest ranked (WTA) player in the draw - Paigina having crunched Emily en route to the Roland Garros semis

Just for the sake of comparison, last year (2016) we had:

Lost in R1: Emily App, Katie Swan, (wc) Ali Collins, (q) Lauryn J-B, (wc) Georgie Axon, (wc) Maia Lumsden, (wc) Eden Richardson, (wc) Ema Lazic

Lost in R2: Jodie Burrage, Fran Jones

Lost in QFs: (wc) Gabi Taylor

Bizarrely the BBC has started 2 junior streams punctually - the ones not featuring British players - and delayed the two with Holly and Eliz to 11.30, along with the other courts

Forget that - apparently courts 5 and 6 have only been scheduled to start at 11.30 for some reason
